EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Junior
Max Widmar collected three hits, scored a pair of runs and drove in a run, but Jaylen Quarles drove in three runs in game one and Drake McNamara had five RBIs in game two leading Southern Indiana to a sweep of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Sunday at the Southern Indiana Field.
Southern Indiana won the opener 4-3 on a walk-off base on balls and then had 16 hits in game two in recording a 14-3 victory. The Screaming Eagles improved to 16-14 overall and 9-2 in the GLVC with the two wins, while Wisconsin-Parkside dropped to 12-14 overall and 6-6 in conference play.
Wisconsin-Parkside rallied to tie game one in the top of the seventh inning, but the Screaming Eagles pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh to post the win.
The Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning of game one when
Domenic Hammudeh doubled in Widmar who had singled to lead off the inning.
Southern Indiana tied the game with a run in the fourth inning and then took a 3-1 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Rangers would fight back to tie the score.
Troy Bittenbender hit a one-out triple in the top of the sixth inning and came in to score when Widmar singled to left to bring the Rangers to within 3-2.
Wisconsin-Parkside pushed across a run in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game. Hammudeh was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Kyle Schulz. After
Zach Thompson lined out to right,
Kyohei Makita doubled to right to score Hammudeh with the tying run.
The Screaming Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out and Quarles drew a walk to force in Angel Torres with the winning run.
Wisconsin-Parkside jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning of game two. The Rangers loaded the bases with no outs when Bittenbender was hit by a pitch, Widmar singled and
Trent Muscat was also hit by a pitch.
Hammudeh become the third Ranger to get plunked in the inning, which scored Bittenbender with the first run of the game and Wisconsin-Parkside also scored a run on a ground ball double play.
Southern Indiana would then reel off 11 consecutive runs to take an 11-2 lead before Muscat scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh inning.
The Rangers return to action on April 14-15 when it visits Indianapolis for a four-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Friday at 11 a.m.
