Rangers Sweep 11th-Ranked Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS -- Senior Jake Kolasinski hit a grand slam and drove in seven runs in game two and Nate Stolte and Max Widmar combined to pitch a shutout in game one leading Wisconsin-Parkside to a Great Lakes Valley Conference sweep of No. 11 Indianapolis on Friday at Greyhound Park.

The Rangers won the opener 5-0 as Stolte and Widmar combined to blank the Greyhounds and Kolasinski keyed an offensive explosion in game two with his career-high seven RBIs as Wisconsin-Parkside completed the sweep with a 16-3 win.

Stolte, who lowered his team-leading earned run average to 1.72, improved to 3-0 on the season by pitching 6.0 innings and allowing just four hits and striking out one hitter. Widmar came on in relief to work the final 3.0 innings and allowed two hits and struck out two batters to notch his third save of the season.

Kyle Schulz paced the Wisconsin-Parkside offense in game one as he went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Nick Janssen had two hits and drove in two runs. Kolasinski, Widmar and Zach Thompson also added base hits for the Rangers.

Schulz got the Rangers off to a fast start in game one as he blasted a 3-1 pitch to left for a leadoff homer and a 1-0 Rangers lead.

The Rangers would tack on another run to extend the lead to 2-0 in the first inning. Kyohei Makita and Kolasinski each drew walks and advanced a base on a balk. Janssen hit an RBI groundout to bring home Makita with the Rangers second run.

Wisconsin-Parkside would add three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Kolasinski doubled to lead off the inning and came around to score when Janssen followed with a double to up the Rangers lead to 3-0.

Wisconsin-Parkside increased the margin to 4-0 when Widmar reached on a fielding error, which allowed Janssen to score from second base.

Schulz brought home the Rangers final run of the inning when Schulz reached on an infield single, which scored Thompson from third base.

After leaning on its pitching in game one, the Rangers turned to their bats in game two as they pounded out 13 hits and scored a season-high 16 runs.

Kolasinski went 3-for-5 in game two with a double, a grand slam and seven RBIs to spark the offensive assault. Makita went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBIs, while Widmar had two hits and drove in three runs.

Junior Domenic Hammudeh added two hits and an RBI for the Rangers and Schulz, Thompson and Troy Bittenbender each had a base hit in game two.

Ranger starter Mario Samuel was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst as he went 6.2 innings and allowed just four hits and three runs while striking out five to post his second win of the season.

The Rangers jumped on the Greyhounds for five runs in the top of the first inning of game two.

Kolasinski hit a two-run double, while Widmar, Bittenbender and Hammudeh added RBI in the first inning to stake the Rangers to a big early lead.

The Rangers increased the lead to 7-0 in the top of the fifth inning when Widmar blasted a two-run homer to right.

After Indianapolis scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, Wisconsin-Parkside responded with three more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Makita hit a two-run double and Kolasinski added an RBI single to increase the lead to 10-1.

Wisconsin-Parkside capped its scoring with six runs in the top of the seventh inning, which included the grand slam by Kolasinski.

Wisconsin-Parkside improved to 14-14 overall and 8-6 in the GLVC with the two wins, while Indianapolis dropped to 24-12 on the season and 8-6 in conference play.

The two teams will conclude the four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday (April 15) beginning at 11 a.m.
