EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Senior
Kyohei Makita recorded four hits, but three Southern Indiana pitcher held Wisconsin-Parkside to one run as the Screaming Eagles swept a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader from the Rangers on Saturday at the Southern Indiana Field.
Southern Indiana won the opener 7-1 and completed the sweep with a 6-0 victory in game two. The Screaming Eagles improved to 14-14 overall and 7-3 in conference with the wins, while the Rangers dropped to 12-12 overall and 6-4 in the GLVC.
Makita went 4-for-7 in the doubleheader, which included three hits in game one, while
Jake Kolasinski was 3-for-7 in the twinbill.
Max Widmar drove in the Rangers lone run on the day with a sacrifice fly in the opener.
Lucas Barnett and Ryan Gulledge combined to limit Wisconsin-Parkside to one run in the opening game, while Kyle Griffin pitched a five-hit shutout in game two.
Southern Indiana scored a run in the bottom of the first inning of game one and then broke the game open with a six-run bottom of the fifth inning.
The Rangers broke through for a run in the top of the eighth inning.
Troy Bittenbender hit a one-out single and advanced to second when Makita reached on an infield single. Wisconsin-Parkside loaded the bases when Kolasinski also reached on an infield single and Widmar delivered a sacrifice fly to left that brought home Bittenbender with the Rangers run.
Southern Indiana scored three times in the bottom of the second inning and added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 5-0 lead. It was more than enough offense for Griffin who struck out seven and didn't walk a batter in improving to 3-3 on the season.
The two teams will conclude the four-game series on Sunday (April 9) with a doubleheader beginning at noon at the Southern Indiana Field.
