INDIANAPOLIS -- Junior
Andrew Luscomb had two hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs and Wisconsin-Parkside routed No. 11 Indianapolis 21-11 in game two of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Greyhound Park to secure the series victory over the Greyhounds.
After Indianapolis posted a 7-1 win in the first game of the doubleheader, the Rangers erupted for a season-high 21 runs and notched a season-high 22 hits in the second game. With the win, Wisconsin-Parkside captured the series 3-1 and improved to 15-15 overall on the season and 9-7 in conference play. Indianapolis dropped to 25-13 overall and 9-7 in the GLVCÂ after its game-two loss.
Luscomb finished game two 2-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBIs, while
Nick Janssen hit a grand slam and finished with four RBIs.
Max Widmar was 4-for-6 with three runs scored and three RBIs and
Zach Thompson,
Kyohei Makita and
Troy Bittenbender each had three hits. Every Ranger starter had at least one hit as
Kyle Schulz,
Jake Kolasinski and Trent Muscant had two hits, while Janssen finished with one base hit.
The Rangers, who scored 43 runs and banged out 53 hits in the four games of the series, raced out to 6-0 lead in the first inning of game two.
Schulz singled to center to begin the inning and Thompson followed with an infield single. After Makita moved the runners up a base with a groundout, Kolasinski tripled to left center to score Schulz and Thompson and give the Rangers an early 2-0 lead.
Widmar pushed the lead to 3-0 with a double to left and Bittenbender brought home Widmar with a single up the middle to increase the lead to 4-0. Luscomb capped the scoring by ripping a two-run double that plated Bittenbender and Muscat to push the lead to 6-0.
Indianapolis responded by scoring five times in the bottom of the first inning, but Wisconsin-Parkside would answer in the top of the third inning by scoring six more times.
Bittenbender led off the inning with a homer to center to up the lead to 7-5 and Schulz would score later in the inning on a wild pitch to make it 8-5 in favor of Wisconsin-Parkside. Janssen capped the inning by blasting a grand slam to left center that gave the Rangers a 12-5 lead.
Wisconsin-Parkside kept battering the Indianapolis staff as it tacked on three runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth frame.
In the fourth inning, Bittenbender scored on a wild pitch and Makita singled up the middle to score Luscomb and Schulz to up the lead to 15-6. Luscomb ripped a two-run homer to left in the fifth inning, which gave the Rangers a 17-8 lead.
The Rangers added four runs in the top of the eighth inning when Widmar hit a two-run single and Bittenbender hit a run-scoring triple and later scored on a wild pitch.
Wisconsin-Parkside had nine hits in game one, but left eight runners on base in a 7-1 loss. Jake Sprinkle scattered the nine hits and permitted just the one run to notch the win for the Greyhounds.
Schulz and Makita each had three hits in the opener, while Thompson had two hits and Kolasinski also added a base hit.
Wisconsin-Parkside will return to action on Wednesday (April 19) when it hosts Robert Morris-Chicago at 12 p.m. in non-conference play.
