Rangers Top Lewis on Senior Day; Earn First Round Bye

SOMERS, Wis. -- Alexander Brown and Goran Zagorac each scored 15 points and Wisconsin-Parkside made 5-of-6 free throw attempts down the stretch as the Rangers topped Lewis 69-62 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game on Senior Night on Thursday in DeSimone Gymnasium.

With the win, Wisconsin-Parkside secured third place in the GLVC East Division and earned a first round bye in the upcoming conference tournament and will begin play on Thursday (March 2) against an opponent to be determined.

With the Rangers trailing 54-53 with 6:04 to play in the game, Zagorac put Wisconsin-Parkside ahead to stay at 55-54 with a jumper at the 5:47 mark of the second half.

Chavares Flanigan followed with a three-pointer to extend the Rangers lead to 58-54 with 5:04 remaining in the game.

Nick Norton made two free throws for Lewis to cut the lead to 58-56, but Kendale McCullum drained a three-pointer giving Wisconsin-Parkside a 61-56 advantage with 4:02 to play.

Miles Simelton converted a layup to trim the lead to 61-58, but Jake Verhagen drilled a three-pointer with 3:20 left to up the lead to 64-58.

Lewis, which dropped to 16-12 overall and 11-7 in the GLVC, scored four straight points to cut the lead to 64-62 with 2:20 remaining, but the Rangers knocked down 5-of-6 free throws in the final 42 seconds to hold off the Flyers.

Wisconsin-Parkside, which finished the regular season with a 21-6 overall record and a 13-5 mark in conference play, shot 45.3 percent from the floor and limited Lewis to 43.6 percent shooting. The Rangers forced Lewis into 17 turnovers and turned them into 21 points.

McCullum finished with 10 points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists for Wisconsin-Parkside, while Verhagen added nine points and six rebounds. Flanigan scored seven points off the bench and Adam Bonk scored five points.

Lewis was led by Simelton who scored 17 points, while Cristen Wilson had 15 points and Delaney Blaylock finished with 12 points.

Lewis held a 20-15 lead in the first half following a three-pointer by Simelton with 10:07 to play, but the Rangers responded with a 5-0 run to tie the game. Kyle Flanagan started the run with a layup and Brown converted a three-point play to tie the game at 20-20 with 8:41 to play before halftime.

The Flyers regained the lead at 24-23 on a jumper by Blaylock, but Verhagen and Brown answered with back-to-back three-pointers giving the Rangers a 29-24 lead at the 5:15 mark of the first half.

A jumper by Flanigan and a free throw by McCullum gave Wisconsin-Parkside a 36-28 lead at the intermission.

The second half was tightly contested and featured four ties and four lead changes.

Prior to the start of the game, Wisconsin-Parkside honored Verhagen and Brown as well as student assistant coach Evan Morrissey during Senior Night ceremonies.
