RENSSELAER, Ind. -- Senior
Alexander Brown scored 21 points, but CJ Hardaway led six players in double figures with 22 points and Saint Joseph's upset Wisconsin-Parkside 84-79 in overtime on Thursday in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game in Scharf Fieldhouse.
The Rangers scored the first points of overtime on a layup by
Kendale McCullum, but the Pumas responded with an 8-0 run to take control of the extra session.
Davious Webster tied the game at 73-73 with a jumper to begin the run and Kindred Williams put Saint Joseph's ahead to stay with a basket with 2:32 to play in overtime.
Webster added a three-pointer and Williams made 1-of-2 free throws to extend the lead to 79-73 with 1:19 to play.
Espen Fjaerstad cut the lead in half with a three-pointer with 1:03 to play, but Webster hit a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 81-76 with 47 seconds left to play.
McCullum made a pair of free throws to bring the Rangers to within 81-78 and
Goran Zagorac made 1-of-2 free throws with 33 seconds left after the Rangers forced a turnover to cut the lead to 81-79 at the 31 second mark.
The Pumas made 3-of-4 down the stretch and Wisconsin-Parkside misfired on its final three three-point attempts.
Wisconsin-Parkside, which dropped to 19-6 overall and 11-5 in conference play, trailed by four points with under a minute to play in regulation but rallied to force overtime.
Hardaway gave the Pumas a 71-67 lead with 58 seconds remaining in the second half with a jumper, but Wisconsin-Parkside would rally.
Adam Bonk made two free throws with 32 seconds remaining to bring the Rangers to within 71-69.
The Rangers fouled Eric Gillespie intentionally and he missed the front end of a 1-and-1 opportunity and Brown tied the score with 14 seconds to play with a layup.
Brown topped 20 points in a game for the eighth time this season after finishing the game 10-of-14 from the floor and 1-of-2 from the three-point line. He also added five assists and five rebounds.
The Rangers also received 16 points, four assists and four rebounds from McCullum, while
Jake Verhagen finished with 13 points.
Saint Joseph's, which improved to 10-16 overall and 4-12 in the GLVC, was led by Hardaway's 22 points. Williams finished with a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds, while Webster added 14 points. Nic Williams finished with 12 points, while Gillespie had 11 points and Davone Daniels added 10 points.
Wisconsin-Parkside returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 19) when it visits Indianapolis for a GLVC contest beginning at 2 p.m. (CST)
