Alexander Brown scored a game-high 17 points, but No. 15 Bellarmine shot 61.5 percent from the floor and scored 47 points in the first half on its way to an 82-62 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over visiting No. 22 Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday in Knights Hall.
The Knights, who improved to 16-3 overall and 8-1 in conference play, shot 61.5 percent from the floor, 75.0 percent from the three-point line and 90.0 percent from the free throw line on its way to a 47-32 lead at the intermission.
After a jumper by
Kendale McCullum and a three-pointer by
Jake Verhagen, the Rangers trailed just 10-9 with 13:06 to play in the opening period.
Bellarmine then reeled off a 14-2 run, which extended the lead to 24-11 with 8:51 to play before halftime.
Wisconsin-Parkside, which dropped to 15-3 overall and 7-2 in conference play, responded with a 12-4 run to cut the lead to 28-23 with 5:47 to play in the opening stanza. McCullum scored five points during the run and
Chavares Flanigan added four points, including a dunk, to bring the Rangers right back into the game.
Bellarmine had a response of its own as the Knights then outscored Wisconsin-Parkside 19-9 over the final five minutes of the first period to take a 47-32 lead into halftime.
Wisconsin-Parkside opened the second half with a 10-3 run, which featured five points each from
Kyle Flanagan and Brown, to cut the lead to 50-42 with 17:07 to play in the game.
Adam Eberhard stretched the lead to 53-42 with a three-pointer, but McCullum answered with a layup to trim the margin to 53-44 at the 14:27 mark of the second period.
A three-pointer by Ben Weyer and a layup by Al Davis increased the Bellarmine lead to 58-44 with 13:33 to play, but the Rangers responded with one more push.
Flanagan hit his second three-pointer of the half to jump start a 7-0 run, which got Wisconsin-Parkside to within 58-51 with 10:34 left in the second period.
Bellarmine then ripped off a 12-2 run, which included two three-pointers by Weyer, to up the lead to 70-53 with 7:13 to play in the game. The Rangers could not get the lead under 15 points for the remainder of the contest.
Wisconsin-Parkside, which shot 46.2 percent from the floor, also received 16 points from Flanagan and 12 points and eight rebounds from McCullum.
Bellarmine was led by Weyer and Rusty Troutman who each scored 15 points. Eberhard finished with 14 points and eight rebounds and Brent Bach chipped in with 13 points.
Wisconsin-Parkside returns to action on Thursday (Jan. 26) when it hosts Illinois Springfield in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at 7:30 p.m. in DeSimone Gymnasium.
