Shelby Cheston and
Brittney Fair each scored 14 points, but a furious Wisconsin-Parkside rally fell short as the Rangers saw their three-game winning streak halted in a 78-71 loss to Southern Indiana in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game on Thursday in the Physical Activities Center.
The Rangers trailed 71-54 with 1:45 to play before putting together a 14-3 run to climb back into the game.
Fair started the run with a three-pointer and
Lauren Boerger converted a three-point play to cut the lead to 71-60 with 1:09 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Taylor Stephen knocked down a jumper following a Southern Indiana turnover to bring the Rangers to within 71-62 with 38 seconds left to play.
Randa Harshbarger made a pair of free throws with 34 seconds left before Fair answered with two free throws for the Rangers.
Harshbarger made one of two free throws to up the lead to 74-64 with 24 seconds remaining, but Stephen hit a jumper and Fair hit two free throws cutting the lead to 74-68 with 18 seconds left in the game.
Harshbarger added two free throws, but Stephen answered with a three-pointer to trim the lead to 76-71 with 10 seconds left to play.
Harshbarger then sealed the game for the Screaming Eagles by making two free throws with eight seconds left in the game.
Southern Indiana improved to 15-3 overall and 7-1 in the GLVC, while Wisconsin-Parkside dropped to 5-11 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
Cheston finished with 14 points and six rebounds, while Fair had 14 points and five rebounds to lead the Rangers.
Olivia Montague was 4-of-7 from the three-point line and scored 12 points, while Stephen scored nine points, grabbed seven rebounds and handed out four assists.
Blair Arthur and Boerger each finished with seven points for Wisconsin-Parkside.
Tanner Marcum led four players in double figures for Southern Indiana with 24 points. Kaydie Grooms added 15 points and nine rebounds, while Morgan Dahlstrom and Harshbarger each had 10 points.
Wisconsin-Parkside outscored Southern Indiana 43-36 in the second half, but could not overcome a 42-28 halftime deficit.
Southern Indiana shot 58.3 percent from the floor in the fourth quarter to hold off the Rangers and turned 20 Wisconsin-Parkside turnovers into 24 points.
Wisconsin-Parkside will return to action on Saturday (Jan. 21) when it visits Bellarmine for a GLVC game beginning at 12 p.m.
