SOMERS, Wis. -- Senior
Brittney Fair scored a career-high 20 points and Wisconsin-Parkside held off a second-half charge from Maryville to record a 61-55 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over the Saints on Thursday in DeSimone Gymnasium.
Fair, who finished the game 6-of-13 from the floor and 8-of-10 from the free throw line, saved her biggest baskets for the fourth quarter. A three-pointer by Amanda Ponce trimmed the Wisconsin-Parkside lead to 43-41 with 9:00 to play in the game, but Fair responded with back-to-back jumpers to increase the Ranger lead to 47-41 with 8:01 remaining in the game.
Shelby Cheston followed with a layup to increase the lead to 49-41 at the 7:00 mark of the fourth quarter.
A Ponce free throw cut the Ranger lead to 51-44, but Fair responded with a driving layup that increased the lead to 53-44 with 3:14 left in the fourth quarter.
After two free throws by Stephanie Sherwood trimmed the lead to 53-46, the Rangers made 8-of-10 free throw attempts down the stretch to hold off the Saints. Fair made 5-of-6 from the free throw line to lead the way.
Wisconsin-Parkside, which won for the second straight time and improved to 4-10 overall and 2-4 in conference play, shot 41.1 percent from the floor but limited Maryville to just 34.6 percent shooting.
The Rangers committed only 11 turnovers, including just four in the second half, while Maryville turned the ball over 20 times which led to 18 Wisconsin-Parkside points.
Fair was the only Ranger to reach double figures, but Wisconsin-Parkside featured a balanced attack as all 11 players that saw action scored.
Lauren Boerger finished with eight points, while
Taylor Stephen scored six points and
Olivia Montague finished with five points.
Clarisa Martinez came off the bench and added five rebounds, three blocked shots and three points.
Maryville, which dropped to 4-8 overall and 0-5 in conference play, was led by Alex Wolf who finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Ali Ringering added 10 points, while Sherwood had eight points and 10 rebounds.
The Rangers took control of the game by ending the second quarter on a 15-0 run, which gave Wisconsin-Parkside a 30-23 lead at the intermission. Montague sparked the run with five points and
Carolina Rahkonen added four points.
The third quarter was tightly contested as the Rangers built a 34-27 lead on a layup by
Hayley Maystead, but the Saints eventually trimmed the lead to 39-37 on a pair of free throws by Wolf with 2:23 to play in the third quarter.
Fair then closed the quarter on a personal 4-1 run giving the Rangers a 43-38 lead heading into the final period.
Wisconsin-Parkside will seek to extend its winning streak to three straight games on Saturday (Jan. 14) when it hosts Missouri-St. Louis at 1 p.m. in DeSimone Gymnasium.
