Alberto Gonzalez scored in the 72nd minute lifting the Wisconsin-Parkside men's soccer team to a 2-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over host Bellarmine on Sunday at O.B. Frazier Stadium.
Alberto Gonzalez broke a 1-1 deadlock by taking a feed from
Antonio Gonzalez deep in the box and beating Zach Pogue to put the Rangers in front at the 72:04 mark of the second period.
Ranger keeper
Nate Kitchell, and the UWP defense, made the lead stand up for the remainder of the match. Kitchell made one save and the Rangers blocked four shots in the final 17:56 to preserve the victory.
Wisconsin-Parkside, which improved to 3-4-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the GLVC, snapped a five match winless streak and posted its first conference win of the season.
Bellarmine dropped to 3-5-1 overall and 2-4 in conference play with the loss.
Kitchell was outstanding in goal for the Rangers as he improved to 2-0 on the season by making nine saves.
Wisconsin-Parkside jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 5:10 into the match when
Ryan Shogren scored his third goal of the season from seven yards out.
Bellarmine knotted the match just before the intermission when Ryan Fagan picked up a loose ball and beat Kitchell at the 35:15 mark.
The Rangers return to Wood Road Field on Friday (Sept. 30) when it hosts Illinois-Springfield in a GLVC match beginning at 12 p.m.
