SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Apr. 24, 2016)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball team earned a doubleheader split on Sunday afternoon, blanking host and Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division rival University of Illinois Springfield 7-0 in the opener before dropping the nightcap 7-3.
Â
Tyler Jandron notched a one-hitter on the mound in game one, propelling the visiting Rangers to the shutout win.
Â
UW-Parkside (8-28, 3-17 GLVC) opened the scoring in the first inning with
Kyohei Makita blasting a solo home run to give the Rangers the early 1-0 edge. The floodgates opened in the fifth inning, with Parkside piling on six runs to push its advantage to 7-0.
DJ Peltz drove in the frame's first score before a
Juan Bowers double plated two more scores.
Â
Peltz touched home plate on a pass ball followed by RBI hits from
Kyle Schulz and
Troy Bittenbender, giving UW-Parkside the seven-run edge.
Â
11 of the 12 hits came off the bats of Ranger players with Makita, Peltz, and
Juan Bowers all collecting a pair of hits.
Â
Jandron struck out nine over the course of the seven inning contest, earning his second shutout in as many weeks.
Â
In game two, a Schulz sacrifice fly scored
Nick Janssen in the second inning, giving UW-Parkside the 1-0 lead before Illinois Springfield tied the contest in the bottom of the frame. The Prairie Stars (23-17, 3-17 GLVC) tacked on three runs in both the third and fourth innings, seizing a 7-1 advantage.
Â
The Rangers whittled down the gap in the fifth with a
Zach Thompson sac fly bringing in Schulz before a Schulz walk with the bases loaded brought in Makita in the sixth, closing the gap to 7-3. A flyout the next at-bat stranded three on base and the Rangers were only able to generate one baserunner the rest of the game as UIS claimed the win to secure a Sunday split.
Â
Trent Muscat led the Rangers at the plate, finishing two-for-four.
Â
Connor Cunningham was hit with the loss, striking out five and allowing seven earned runs in 3 1/3 innings while
Cody Rolshoven handled the final 4 2/3 frames, collecting four strikeouts. UIS's Adam Gregory posted the win, striking out four in 5 1/3 innings of labor while Richard England tallied the save with five punchouts over the final three innings.
Â
UW-Parkside returns to the diamond on Wednesday, hosting Saint Xavier University in a non-league tilt at Oberbruner Field.
