(Mar. 25, 2016)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball squad owned leads in both ends of its Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader against Saint Joseph's College on Friday afternoon but was unable to finish off both contests, falling 6-5 in a marathon 10-inning affair before stumbling 9-4 in game two.
Â
The host Pumas (10-19, 7-3 GLVC) struck first in the game one overtime epic, pushing across a single run in the bottom of the first before the Rangers (3-23, 0-10 GLVC) equalized the score in the fourth with a run of their own.
Â
Paige Schmittling drove in UW-Parkside's opening run, plating
Kellie Fenza who led off the inning with a single up the middle. Saint Joseph's reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth before the Rangers tallied a run in the top of the seventh, tying the score at 2-2 and forcing extras.
Â
Caressa DeRossett led off the seventh with a pinch hit single before getting replaced on the base paths by
Cassie Walek. Walek stole second and advanced to third on a groundout before scoring the tying run on a wild pitch with two outs.
Â
In the eighth, a pair of singles set the table for
Alexis Simone who belted a double to right field, bringing in Fenza and Sarah Markelonis before a Schmittling outfield single brought in Simone to give the visitors the 5-2 edge. The advantage proved fleeting with the Pumas grinding out six hits and scoring three runs in the bottom of the frame to extend the contest to the ninth inning. Neither team was able to break through in the ninth while a one-out double in the bottom of the 10th plated the winning score as the Pumas emerged with the 6-5 victory.
Â
Fenza led the Rangers at the plate with a three-for-five effort while Markelonis, Simone, and Schmittling all finished with a pair of hits.
Â
Bridget Jost was hit with the loss, pitching the final 1 1/3 innings in relief of
Amber Ramos, who yielded just three hits through the first seven innings while striking out three. SJC's Morgan Masters collected the victory striking out one and allowing no runs in 2 2/3 innings of labor.
Â
In game two, a pair of errors allowed Fenza to score the contest's opening run in the second after she led off the frame with a single to right field. UW-Parkside doubled its advantage in the third with Walek blasting a two-out solo home run.
Â
Saint Joseph's offense came alive in the fourth inning, capitalizing on three Ranger errors to bring in five runs to seize the 5-2 lead. Parkside put a dent into SJC's lead in the sixth with
Madison Manders doubling in Fenza before a
Carly Dundee single plated Manders, narrowing the gap to just a single run.
Â
The Pumas padded its lead in the bottom of the sixth, posting four runs to build a five-run gap.
Â
Rachel Seefeldt led the Ranger offense, going three-for-four while Fenza and Manders each tallied a pair of hits.
Â
Dundee was saddled with the loss, pitching a complete game and allowing three earned runs while her counterpart, Sara Demuth earned the run, allowing four runs in 5 2/3 innings.
Â
The Rangers return to the diamond on Saturday, facing second-ranked University of Indianapolis in a twinbill getting underway at 12 p.m. (Eastern Time).
