ROMEOVILLE, Ill. (Mar. 25, 2016)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball team opened up its Great Lakes Valley Conference slate on Friday afternoon at Brennan Field, suffering 17-2 and 8-6 setbacks to host Lewis University.

In the opener, UW-Parkside (3-13, 0-2 GLVC) plated a pair of runs in the top of the first but it was all Flyers (12-5, 2-0 GLVC) after that with the home side tying the score with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third before piling on 10 in the fourth en route to the 17-2 win.

Troy Bittenbender opened the game by drawing a walk before advancing to second after Zach Thompson safely reached base on a sacrifice bunt, Kyohei Makita plated Bittenbender on an outfield single before DJ Peltz made it 2-0 with a single to left field, scoring Thompson.

Mario Samuel absorbed the loss, pitching the opening 3 1/3 innings and striking out one. LU's Alex Shake emerged with the win, fanning five and allowed just one earned run in seven innings of work.

In the nightcap, Lewis pushed across a run in the bottom of the second before the Rangers tied the contest with a run in the top of the third. Andrew Luscomb led off the third with a single to left field, later scoring on a Makita groundout. Lewis answered in the bottom of the inning, plating a trio of runs to establish a 4-1 edge.

RBIs from Andrew Luscomb and Nick Sramek closed the gap to a run in the fourth but the Flyers posted a three-spot in the bottom of the frame to seize a 7-3 edge. Peltz drove in a run in the fifth and scored himself later in the frame while Makita singled up the middle in the sixth to score Sramek, closing the gap to a run before LU posted an insurance score in the bottom of the inning as the Flyers escaped with the two-run win.

UW-Parkside pounded out 10 hits with Sramek, Kolasinski, and Peltz all collecting a pair of hits.

Nate Stolte suffered the loss on the mound, striking out two in 2 2/3 innings of work while Cody Rolshovon handled the final 3 1/3 innings, notching three strikeouts.

The Rangers and Flyers close out their series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
