(Mar. 19, 2016)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball squad had its home opener spoiled by Great Lakes Valley Conference rival Quincy University, enduring identical 6-1 setbacks on a frigid Saturday afternoon at the Case Complex.
Â
Game one was all about the longball with all seven runs scored on balls leaving the park. Visiting Quincy (8-10, 3-3 GLVC) grabbed a 2-0 lead after 2 ½ innings of play, blasting solo home runs in the top of the first and third innings. UW-Parkside (3-19, 0-6 GLVC) registered its lone run in the bottom of the third with
Rachel Seefeldt clearing the left field wall for her second home run of the season. The Hawks added a solo blast in the sixth and a three-run shot in the seventh for the final 6-1 margin.
Â
Carly Dundee was saddled with the loss, striking out four in 6 1/3 innings of work. QU's Tiffany Harbison netted the complete game win, fanning nine while allowing just three hits.
Â
In game two, Quincy scored runs in each of the first three innings and raced out to a 6-0 lead en route to the sweep. Three hits and a walk morphed into two runs for the Hawks in the first frame before pushing across single scores in both the second and third innings. QU's edge mushroomed to 6-0 in the fifth before the Rangers got on the board in the bottom of the same inning.
Â
Cassie Walek absorbed a pitch to earn a free pass to first before stealing second. Dundee belted a single to center field the next at-bat, plating Walek with two outs. A strikeout prematurely ended the Ranger rally and neither team was able to muster any runs in the final two innings as QU came away with the 6-1 win.
Â
Dundee and
Courtney Ellingson accounted for all four of the Rangers' hits in the nightcap, both finishing two-for-three at the dish.
Â
Bridget Jost suffered the loss, pitching the opening 4 1/3 innings before making way for
Amber Ramos. Ramos struck out two and allowed no runs over the final 2 2/3 innings of play. QU's Kristen Skala nabbed the win, fanning four in the complete game effort.
Â
The Rangers cap off their homestand on Sunday, facing Truman State University at 12 p.m.
