(Mar. 12, 2016)-- An early deficit proved too much to overcome as the University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball team suffered a 5-3 setback to non-conference foe Judson University on Saturday at Hoffer Field.
The host Eagles (12-13) scored single runs in both the first and third innings while putting up two in the bottom of the second to stake an early 4-0 edge. The Rangers (3-5) got on the board in the fifth with
Trent Muscat driving in
Nick Sramek on a single after Sramek led off the inning with a base knock down the left field line.
Judson extended its buffer in the sixth, generating a run for the 5-1 lead. UW-Parkside plated a pair of runs in the eighth and had the tying run at the plate with no outs but a strikeout, a groundout and a flyball silenced the Ranger comeback attempt.
Jake Kolasinski drove in both runs in the eighth, belting a double to center field, scoring
Lovell Chandler and
Kyohei Makita after both safely reached base on singles.
Makita, Kolasinski,
Juan Bowers, and
Zach Thompson led the Rangers at the plate, each collecting a pair of hits as visiting UW-Parkside outhit Judson by a 12-10 margin.
Riley Phillips suffered the loss, allowing one earned run in 1 1/3 innings of action while
Mario Samuel and
Josh Serio combined for 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief late in the game, striking out two. JU's Mark DeYoung claimed the win, going 7 innings and fanning five while DJ Spears handled the final frame to net the save.
UW-Parkside returns to the diamond on Tuesday, taking on nationally-ranked Minnesota State University-Mankato in a neutral site twinbill in Mauston, Wisconsin.
