(Mar. 11, 2016)-- Hannah Perryman proved to be the bane of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball team's existence on Friday afternoon as the University of Missouri-Saint Louis All-American pitcher tossed a pair of complete-game victories at the expense of the Rangers to open up Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The seventh-ranked Tritons scratched out a 1-0 win in the opener before holding on for the 3-1 win in the nightcap.
It was a pitcher's duel in the opener with the two teams mustering a combined five hits while Ranger hurler
Amber Ramos and Triton ace Perryman combined for 24 strikeouts.
Cassie Walek blasted a double down the left field line in the first inning but was unable to advance any further after a pair of strikeouts shut down the inning. UMSL (20-1, 2-0 GLVC) pushed across the first and ultimately only run in the second inning, stringing together a walk, hit batter, and a single to secure the 1-0 lead.
The Rangers (3-15, 0-2 GLVC) led off the sixth with a bunt single from
Paige Schmittling but were unable to muster any more offense as the Tritons escaped the frame with the lead en route to the 1-0 win.
Ramos was saddled with the loss despite pitching a gem, striking out seven and allowing just three hits in the complete game effort. Her counterpart, Perryman collected 17 strikeouts in the complete game effort, allowing just two base runners in game one.
The Tritons struck early in game two, leading off the bottom of the first with a home run before pushing across another later in the inning on an outfield single. A solo home run upped the host's edge to 3-0 in the fourth before the Rangers got on the board in the sixth.
Rachel Seefeldt got things going with a double to left field, later scoring after
Caressa DeRossett belted a two-bagger to right center field. A flyout ended the frame prematurely for UW-Parkside before going three-up and three-down in the seventh as UMSL secured the sweep.
Carly Dunee absorbed the defeat, pitching all six innings and striking out two while Perryman went the distance with 14 strikeouts, allowing just three base runners all game.
The Rangers return to the diamond on Saturday, facing Maryville University at noon.
