Women's Hoops Rallies Past Hawks on Alumni Day

SOMERS, Wis. (Feb. 6, 2016)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's basketball team held Rockhurst University scoreless over the final five minutes and 31 seconds of Saturday's Great Lakes Valley Conference clash, erasing a 14-point deficit en route to a 64-58 victory inside DeSimone Gymnasium on Alumni Day.
 
The visiting Hawks (12-9, 5-8 GLVC) owned a 14-point lead in the opening half and led by seven with 7:40 remaining in the game before the Rangers (13-8, 7-6 GLVC) closed the contest on a 15-2 run, holding Rockhurst scoreless for the final 5:31 to secure the squad's fifth straight Saturday victory.
 
A technical foul assessed to Parkside led to a pair of Mary Dineen free throws as Rockhurst took a 56-49 lead with 7:40 left in the game. Jessica Prince started the Ranger run, hitting a pair of free throws before Kristin Conniff buried a three to knot the score at 58 with 5:18 left.
 
Stephanie Furr added a three with 3:48 left while the Rangers hit three free throws in the final 30 seconds, scoring the final nine points of the contest to seal the win. Rockhurst was ice cold from the floor over the final 5:31, misfiring on all nine field goal attempts.
 
UW-Parkside owned an early 6-4 edge but Rockhurst closed the first period on a 16-6 run, staking a 20-12 lead after 10 minutes of play. The Rangers closed within four with 7:19 left in the second period but a 10-0 Hawk run gave the visitors their largest buffer of the game at 33-19 with 4:05 left before halftime. The Green and White closed the gap to 35-27 at the half before pulling within three heading into the final quarter.
 
Furr paced the Rangers with 21 points and eight rebounds while Prince added 10 points and eight boards. Shelby Cheston was the third Ranger in double figures, scoring 10 points with seven boards.
 
RU's Dineen led all scorers, netting 24 points and was the only Hawk in double figures.
 
UW-Parkside shot just 37.9 percent (11-for-29) from the floor in the first half before shooting at a 50 percent clip (12-for-24) over the final 20 minutes. Rockhurst hit eight threes in the opening half, shooting at a 57.1 percent clip before misfiring on all six attempts from distance in the second half.
 
Parkside returns to action on Thursday evening, traveling to Kirksville, Missouri to face Truman State University in a GLVC showdown slated for 5:30 p.m.
