RENSSELAER, Ind. -- Senior
Brittney Fair scored 16 points and handed out a career-high nine assists, but Northern Michigan used a 10-2 run midway through the fourth quarter to pull away from Wisconsin-Parkside for an 81-69 victory over the Rangers on Saturday in the second round of the Puma Thanksgiving Basketball Classic at Scharf Fieldhouse.
The Rangers, who dropped to 0-5 on the season, trailed 54-52 at the 6:55 mark of the fourth quarter after a jumper by
Taylor Stephen. The Wildcats then used its game-changing 10-2 run to take a 64-54 lead with 4:28 to play in the game. Chloe Tompkins and Bre Gaspervich each hit three-pointers during the run and Darby Youngstrom capped the run by completing a three-point play.
Wisconsin-Parkside trimmed the lead to 66-58 on a pair of free throws by
Carolina Rahkonen, but the Wildcats upped the lead to 73-60 with 56 seconds to play on the strength of making seven free throws.
Fair finished the game 5-of-11 from the floor and also added three steals and a rebound. It marked the fourth time in five games that Fair has led the Rangers in scoring.
Rahkonen finished with a career-high 14 points and also had five rebounds and a steal, while
Shelby Cheston added 13 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots for the Rangers.
Northern Michigan, which improved to 5-2 on the season, was led by Gaspervich who led four players in double figures with 18 points. Tompkins and Erin Honkala each finished with 12 points, while Youngstrom recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Wisconsin-Parkside got off to a solid start as the Rangers shot 50 percent from the floor in the first quarter and held a 20-14 lead, which marks the first time this season that UWP has held a lead after one quarter.
Wisconsin-Parkside took its largest lead of the game in the second quarter when back-to-back three-pointers from Rahkonen and
Asiah Lawson gave the Rangers a 26-15 lead with 5:43 to play before halftime.
Northern Michigan responded with a 13-0 run to take a 28-26 lead with 2:10 to play in the second quarter.
Wisconsin-Parkside took a 31-30 lead into halftime as Fair made 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch.
Both teams held the lead in the third quarter as Wisconsin-Parkside twice held a four-point lead, while Northern Michigan took a five-point lead with 1:48 to play in the third.
Blair Arthur hit her second three-pointer of the quarter to cut the Wildcats lead to 50-48 heading into the final quarter.
Northern Michigan then used its game-changing run midway through the final stanza to seal the victory.
Wisconsin-Parkside will return to action on Thursday (Dec. 1) when it hosts Indianapolis in its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener at 5:30 p.m. in DeSimone Gymnasium.
