Rangers Stuff the Pumas in Straight Sets

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SOMERS, Wis. (Nov. 11, 2016)-- Lexi Turek and Lauren Hickson led the University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball squad's blocking efforts, with 8 and 7 block assists respectively, in a 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-19) sweep of the visiting Great Lakes Valley Conference rival Saint Joseph's College on Friday.

Two of the Rangers (13-17, 9-8 GLVC) first four points of the match came from the blocking dual of Katie Adams and Elizabeth Mavis, in a match filled with Parkside blocks. The Pumas (7-22, 3-14 GLVC) took control early in the first set, taking a 6-3 lead. Annie Leo then went on to serve seven straight, which included two team blocks by the Rangers. Saint Joseph's cut the lead to one, trailing 8-9 after two successful kills. UW-Parkside then went on a 15-3 run, but then it took three set points to close out the first set 25-13.

Saint Joseph's continued their early success in the second set, leading 7-3 to start things off. Parkside rallied with a 9-2 run, during which Lauren Hickson had 2 assists, 2 blocks, and a kill. The Pumas came back to take the lead 13-12. That was the final Puma lead of the set, as the Rangers powered past Saint Joseph's with a 13-3 run, winning the second set 25-16.

The Pumas would not go away quietly, again taking the first points of the third set and leading 5-1 early on. Later, trailing 7-3, the Rangers capped off a 6-1 run with back-to-back blocks from the pair of Lauren Hickson and Lexi Turek. Both teams traded points along the way, and the set was tied 18-all when the Rangers ran away with the 25-19 victory after a 7-1 run, including another block from Hickson and Turek.

Rebecca Roembke led the team in both digs (13) and kills (8) during the match. Kasey Davis added 11 kills and 6 digs to the Rangers' winning efforts. Lauren Hickson had a team high 24 assists, and she also had 8 digs, 7 blocks, 5 kills, and an ace. Besides her team leading 8 blocks, Lexi Turek also had 7 kills in the match.

The Rangers will close out the season with a final home game against Indianapolis University on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 3pm. The winner of the match will finish in third place in the GLVC East Division and will advance on to the GLVC Volleyball Championship tournament. Only one of the two teams will advance on to the tournament.
