SOMERS, Wis. -- Seniors
Jillian Hetfleisch and
Vianey Hernandez each scored goals and Wisconsin-Parkside secured a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament with a 2-0 victory over Indianapolis on Friday at Wood Road Field.
Hetfleisch and Hernandez each scored in the first period and freshman goalie
Adrianna Bratel made the lead stand up with a strong second period in goal. After Indianapolis didn't record a shot on goal in the first period, the Greyhounds fired five shots on net in the second period. Her best save came in the 86th minute when Michele Govern had a header at point-blank range, but Bratel punched the attempt aside to keep the Greyhounds off the scoreboard.
With the victory, Wisconsin-Parkside improved to 8-5-2 overall and 8-4-1 in the GLVC. The top eight teams in the conference standings advance to the conference tournament, which will begin on Oct. 30 at the site of the top-four seeds.
Hetfleisch and Hernandez teamed to put the Rangers ahead in the fifth minute. Hernandez slid a pass past the defense onto the foot of Hetfleisch who then beat Indianapolis keeper Emma Crenshaw to the low side of the net for a 1-0 Rangers lead.
Hernandez extended the lead just before the intermission.
Abigail Banks found Hernadez at the top of the 18 and she lofted the ball to the top right of the net to push the Wisconsin-Parkside lead to 2-0 with 51 seconds to play before halftime.
Wisconsin-Parkside substituted freely in the second period and 18 players saw time on the field in the victory. Hernandez led the Rangers with five shots, while Hetfleisch finished with two shots.
Taylor Burek,
Viktoria Silva and
Samantha O'Brien also recorded shots for the UW-Parkside.
The Rangers return to action on Sunday (Oct. 23) when they visit Saint Joseph's for a GLVC match beginning at 12 p.m.
