(Jan. 21, 2016)-- A red-hot start was unable to carry the University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's basketball team to a victory on Thursday night inside DeSimone Gymnasium, succumbing to a last second shot in a 75-73 setback to Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division rival Bellarmine University.
Â
The homestanding Rangers (10-6, 4-4 GLVC) owned a 73-71 advantage with 42 seconds left before a Raven Merriweather bucket tied the game with 33 ticks left. A UW-Parkside turnover put the ball back in the hands of the Knights (13-1, 7-1 GLVC) who missed a pair of jumpers before Destony Curry hit the winning bucket with three seconds left. The Rangers attempted a full court desperation heave as time expired but it fell short as Bellarmine escaped with the two-point decision.
Â
UW-Parkside was firing on all cylinders in the opening 14 minutes of the contest, enjoying a 20-9 lead after the first quarter and building a 19-point buffer off a
Rani Singh jumper with 6:57 left before halftime. The Knights fought back over the next five minutes, scoring 17 consecutive points and forcing the Rangers to misfire on all seven of their field goal attempts, closing the gap to just two at 32-30 with 1:35 left before halftime and took a 36-34 edge into the locker room at halftime.
Â
The second half saw three lead changes and nine ties. UW-Parkside led 52-51 after three quarters of play after
Stephanie Furr drained a three at the buzzer. The Green and White extended its lead to eight points midway through the final period and led by six with 1:59 remaining but BU tallied 10 of the final 12 points to steal the victory.
Â
Furr continued her scoring spree, finishing with 20 points to pace the Rangers while adding five rebounds.
Olivia Montague came off the bench and tallied 13 points, all coming in the second half while
Tara Knapstein chipped in 10 along with seven assists and three blocks.
Jessica Prince powered the Rangers on the boards, securing nine boards.
Â
Sarah Galvin led BU with 26 points and eight boards with Kelsey Adwell adding 19.
Â
UW-Parkside shot 51.5 percent (17-for-33) from the floor in the opening half and ended the game shooting at a 46.9 percent clip (30-for-64).
Â
