(Jan. 23, 2016)-- Tara Knapstein collected her 1,000th-career point, helping the University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's basketball squad close its homestand with a 72-60 victory over Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division rival University of Southern Indiana on Saturday inside DeSimone Gymnasium.

The Screaming Eagles (10-7, 3-6 GLVC) scored the opening bucket but the host Rangers (11-6, 5-4 GLVC) netted 13 of the next 15, enjoying a 13-4 edge midway through the first period. Five different Rangers scored during the run, including Knapstein who capped off the spurt with a three with 4:30 remaining. UW-Parkside's advantage was reduced to just two points at 15-13 at the end of the period before USI retook the lead 13 seconds into the second on a three from Kendyl Dearing.

Kristin Conniff hit a jumper to tip the scales back in favor of Parkside only to surrender the lead the next possession as USI took an 18-17 lead with 9:07 remaining.
Stephanie Furr answered with a three to give the lead back to the Rangers 19 seconds later and UW-Parkside never trailed the rest of the contest. Southern Indiana tied the game at 22 but
Rani Singh hit a three off an offensive rebound, touching off a 7-0 spurt for the home side who enjoyed a 37-30 lead at the intermission.

UW-Parkside's lead mushroomed to as many as 14 in the third, ending the period with a 51-41 lead. Southern Indiana charged back in the fourth, closing within four at 62-58 with 3:43 after Kaydie Grooms hit a layup and a free throw but 10 consecutive made free throws by the Rangers in the final 3:16 kept the Screaming Eagles at bay.

Knapstein and
Shelby Cheston both came off the bench and led the Rangers with 12 points. Knapstein secured her milestone 1,000th-point on a layup with 3:23 left in the third and ended the afternoon with 1,004 career points. Furr added nine points, eight boards, and five assists while
Jessica Prince had eight points and a team-best 10 rebounds.
Brittney Fair tallied eight points while dishing out a game-high six assists.

Morgan Dahlstrom paced USI with 14 points with Tanner Marcum adding 10.

UW-Parkside finished the afternoon a perfect 14 for 14 at the charity stripe, including all 10 attempts in the waning minutes. The Green and White held a 32-18 edge in the paint and a 39-18 advantage in bench production while limiting the Eagles to shooting just 33.8 percent (22-for-65) for the game, including a paltry 29.4 percent (10-for-34) in the second half.

The Rangers return to the hardwood on Thursday evening, facing GLVC East rival McKendree University at 5:30 p.m. in Lebanon, Illinois.
