SOMERS, Wis. (Sept. 11, 2015)-- A Scott Nicolai goal off a free kick in the first half proved to be the difference-maker as the University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's soccer team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference action with a 1-0 triumph over Saint Joseph's College on Friday afternoon at Wood Road Field.

Nicolai netted the eventual game-winner in the 38th minute, converting a free kick from just outside the box to give the homestanding Rangers (1-2, 1-0 GLVC) the lead. The Pumas (1-1. 0-1 GLVC) had their best chance to equalize in the 53rd minute after being awarded a penalty kick but Ranger keeper Remi Bibal made a big save to keep Saint Joseph's off the board in a physical battle featuring 35 fouls and nine yellow cards.

UW-Parkside ended the afternoon with a 13-11 edge in shots but was outgunned 5-3 in shots on goal. Bibal tallied the clean sheet in his first start of the season, making five saves while Puma keeper Adam Whybrow stopped two shots in the losing effort.

The Rangers return to action on Sunday, traveling to Indiana to face the University of Indianapolis at 2:30 p.m. (Eastern Time).
