(Apr. 19, 2015)-- Seventh inning heroics lifted the University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball team to victory in game two on Sunday at Oberbruner Field with a sacrifice fly and an error giving the Rangers a 2-1 walkoff victory against Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division rival University of Illinois Springfield, finishing the doubleheader with a split after falling 6-2 in a marathon 11-inning game to open the day.
In the opener, a four-run outburst by the Prairie Stars (20-21, 14-14 GLVC) in the top of the 11th inning proved too much for the Rangers (11-20, 10-18 GLVC) to overcome, succumbing 6-2 in extra innings.
Illinois Springfield staked a 2-0 lead in the opener, belting solo home runs in both the first and third innings. UW-Parkside got on the board in the fifth inning, manufacturing a run after
Nick Janssen drew a walk to lead off the inning. Janssen advanced to second on a passed ball before reaching third on a UIS error. Janssen later scored on a wild pitch closing the gap to just one run.
DJ Peltz led off the sixth with a walk, stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch.
Bryan Wade laid down a sacrifice bunt to plate Peltz, knotting the game at 2-2. The score remained deadlocked after seven innings forcing extra innings. Neither team was able to tally a run in the first three extra innings before UIS came alive with its four-run surge in the 11th.
John Dokolas suffered the loss in relief while the pitching staff of
Mario Samuel,
John Perez, and
Nicolas Rana combined to strike out eight batters and allow just three earned runs over the 11-inning contest. Illinois Springfield's Kyle Schildroth collected the win, tossing the final 5 1/3 innings in relief of Jose Marin. The Prairie Star duo collaborated to strike out 13 Rangers while allowing just two hits all game.
In the nightcap, Illinois Springfield pushed in an unearned run in the first inning and nursed a one run advantage and a no-hitter by pitcher Matt Farrington heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Troy Bittenbender led off the frame by reaching safely on a fielding error while
Zach Thompson reached base on a fielder's choice, giving the homestanding Rangers runners on first and second.
Jake Kolasinski laid down a bunt to break up the no-no and load the bases bringing
DJ Peltz to the plate with no outs. Peltz drove a deep ball to left field, allowing Bittenbender to score on the sacrifice fly while an errant throw by the UIS right fielder allowed Thompson to score, providing the decisive score for the 2-1 walkoff win.
Riley Phillips tallied the complete game win, allowing just five baserunners and no earned runs while UIS's Farrington suffered the loss, striking out five and allowing just one hit and no earned runs in 6 1/3 innings of action.
UW-Parkside closes out its homestand on Tuesday, welcoming in-state rival Cardinal Stritch University to Oberbruner Field for a non-conference game at 2 p.m.
