(Apr. 12, 2015)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball team had 16 baserunners over the course of the doubleheader on Sunday but was only able to generate one run from its opportunities, dropping 6-0 and 5-1 decisions to Great Lakes Valley Conference rival Bellarmine University at Knights Field.
The opener was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning with the host Knights (27-11, 15-5 GLVC) plating a pair of scores off back-to-back doubles. Bellarmine padded its lead with two more runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to secure the 6-0 win.
The Rangers (6-29, 1-19 GLVC) had runners on the corners in the third inning after consecutive base hits from
Madison Manders and
Paige Harbord but a groundout ended the frame with both runners stranded on the basepaths. UW-Parkside threatened again in the sixth inning with two runners in scoring position with one out after
Kalli Gosser hit an outfield single and
Courtney Ellingson hit a double but a groundout and a strikeout preserved the shutout for the homestanding Knights.
Harbord powered the Rangers at the plate in game one, finishing two-for-three.
Carly Dundee absorbed the loss, allowing four earned runs in five innings of work while BU's Alicia Miller collected the complete game shutout, fanning six batters.
Bellarmine struck first in game two, scoring a run in the bottom of the second and adding two more third and pushing across another single score in the fourth for the 4-0 lead. The Rangers finally broke through in the fifth inning, loading the bases with no outs on a Manders single to left field. Parkside was only able to plate one run despite the early inning success, as a Gosser sacrifice fly to score Dundee was sandwiched around a strikeout and a groundout to end the frame with two runners stranded.
The Knights padded their lead in the sixth, plating a single run to take a 5-1 edge and conclude the scoring.
UW-Parkside attempted a late rally, stringing together three base hits with two outs in the top of the seventh to juice the bases and put the tying run at the plate but the Knights were able to escape unscathed after collecting the final out on a fielder's choice.
Harbord and Ellingson led the Rangers offense in game two, both finishing two-for-four at the plate.
Amber Ramos suffered the loss in the circle, throwing the opening inning and allowing one run before giving way to Ellingson who handled the final five innings, yielding one earned run and striking out two. Bellarmine's Marlee Tevis picked up the win, allowing one run and striking out one in the complete game effort.
The Rangers remain on the road next week, heading to Kansas City, Missouri, to face Rockhurst University on Saturday at 12 p.m.
