(Feb. 7, 2015)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's basketball team led nearly wire-to-wire on Saturday afternoon, capping off its tour of the Kansas City area unbeaten by taking down William Jewell College 67-54 inside the Mabee Center to extend its Great Lakes Valley Conference win streak to 11 games.
Â
The host Cardinals (9-11, 5-7 GLVC) opened the game with a pair of layups from Maddie Nelson before the Rangers (18-4,11-2 GLVC) ripped off the next 12 points.
Sarah Mlachnik sparked the Ranger scoring binge, hitting back-to-back shots from three-point range. UW-Parkside owned a comfortable lead the rest of the first half and scored the final seven points of the half, owning a 41-22 buffer after 20 minutes of play.
Â
William Jewell battled back into the game early in the second half, netting the first nine points to close within 10 points with 16:41 remaining.
Â
Gaby Bronson broke up the run, converting a layup and sinking a free throw for a three-point play, helping the visitors push the spread back up to 16 points. Parkside's lead grew to 18 before Jewell mounted one final charge, closing within single digits at 57-48 off a Meagan Paul three with 5:12 remaining.
Â
Tara Knapstein single handedly stymied the rally with a layup, a block, and a three on consecutive possessions, helping the Rangers reestablish a 17-point lead en route to the team's record-setting 11th straight GLVC win.
Â
Knapstein paced the Rangers, netting her first double-double with the season after pouring on 19 points and collecting 11 rebounds off the bench. Conniff chipped in 11 points while Mlachnik had nine points.
Hayli Jo Smith led the Cardinals with 10 points and seven boards while Katie Finn added nine points off the bench.
Â
UW-Parkside sunk nine threes on the afternoon, shooting 40.9 percent (nine-for-22) from distance and enjoyed a 44-36 rebounding edge.
Â
The Rangers return to the court on Thursday evening, hosting Missouri University S&T at 5:30 p.m. inside DeSimone Gymnasium for Civil Servant Day. UW-Parkside will don camouflage uniforms for the occasion while all military, first responder, and government personnel and their families will receive free admission to the game.
