ROSEMONT, Ill. (Feb. 23, 2015)-- Madison Manders finished the weekend hitting .429 at the plate, helping the University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball squad tally two victories at the 2015 Midwest Regional Invitational inside the Rosemont Dome in suburban Chicago.
The Rangers fell 10-2 to Grand Valley State University to open the tournament on Friday before collecting their first win of the season in the matinee, defeating the University of Findlay 6-2. UW-Parkside opened Saturday with a 7-4 victory over former Great Lakes Valley Conference rival Kentucky Wesleyan College before suffering a 6-3 setback to 25th-ranked Winona State University. The Green and White capped off the tournament on Sunday, suffering a 9-2 setback to 15th-ranked Wayne State University.
Against GVSU, Pairge Harbord collected a one-out triple in the top of the first inning, later scoring on a
Courtney Ellingson groundout for the early 1-0 lead. The Lakers (1-0) pushed across three runs in the bottom of the first and added another in the second for a 4-1 edge. A
Therese Jender sacrifice fly, plated
Morgan Dastych in the third inning, cutting the deficit to just two runs but GVSU pulled away late in the game, adding three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to claim the win.
In the nightcap, UW-Parkside cranked out 10 hits, including four doubles in a 6-2 win over the Oilers (0-1). Ellingson got the Rangers rolling in the first inning, belting a single to score
Kalli Gosser who led off the inning with a double to left field. Ellingson blasted an RBI double in the third inning to plate Gosser while Dastych drove in Ellingson with a double to left field, pushing the Parkside advantage to 3-0. The Rangers added three more runs in the fifth inning with a double from Dastych scoring two while a Manders base knock brought in Dastych for the 6-0 lead. Findlay broke up the shutout with two runs in the sixth but was unable to come any closer.Â
Ellingson netted the win, tossing five scoreless innings and striking out five.
On Saturday, a four-run second inning paved the way for Parkside's second straight win, downing the Panthers 7-4.
Emily Bell and Gosser each drove in a run in the second inning, giving UW-Parkside an early 4-0 advantage. KWC responded with three runs in the third inning to close within a run but the Rangers pushed across one run in the fourth and two in the fifth to stake a 7-3 lead. The Panthers scored a run in the top of the seventh but was unable to muster any more offense as the Rangers netted their second straight win.
Carly Dundee collected the win in the circle, allowing three earned runs in four innings of action while
Amber Ramos collected the save, allowing just one run and fanning nine of the 14 batters she faced.
The Rangers closed Saturday against a familiar foe, facing 25th-ranked Winona State for the third time this season. Despite an early 2-1 Ranger lead, the Warriors (5-0) continued to flummox UW-Parkside, claiming the 6-3 win. A solo home run in the second inning gave WSU a 1-0 lead before the Rangers scored two runs off a
Savannah Wells ingle in the fourth inning. The Ranger lead proved fleeting with Winona adding four runs in the fifth inning and another in the sixth for a 6-2 lead. Gosser scored in the top of the seventh to close the gap to three but the Rangers were unable to come any closer in the 6-3 loss.
On Sunday, the Rangers and 15th-ranked Warriors (4-7) were deadlocked at 2-2 after 3 1/2 innings but Wayne State proved to be too much for the Rangers to handle, scoring seven runs over the next three innings to grab the win.
The Warriors scored a pair of runs in the second inning but the Rangers equalized the score after tacking on a run in both the third and fourth innings. Wayne State pushed across a run in the bottom of the fourth to secure a 3-2 lead before piling on three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to conclude the scoring.
Manders paced the Rangers inside the dome, finishing six-for-14 at the plate while Ellingson and Bell each tallied four RBIs apiece over the course of the five games.
The Rangers return to the diamond on Saturday, March 7, heading up to the Husky Dome in Saint Cloud, Minnesota to face Minot State University and the University of Minnesota-Crookston.
