(Feb. 18, 2015)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball team hung tough but was able match the run production of the University of Minnesota-Duluth on Wednesday afternoon, yielding five runs in the third inning in a 6-3 setback in the opener before seeing an early advantage evaporate in a 4-3 loss in game two of the non-conference doubleheader inside the West St. Paul Regional Athletic Center.
The Bulldogs (5-2) got things started in the opener, plating five runs in the third inning. UW-Parkside (0-4) got on the board in the top of the fourth inning with
Paige Harbord leading off the frame with a bunt single. Hardbord advanced to third off a pair of groundouts before scoring off a
Carly Dundee single to right field. UMD plated another run in the bottom of the fifth, staking a 5-1 lead.
Morgan Dastych led off the seventh inning by drawing a walk while
Madison Manders belted her first collegiate home run, clearing the left fence to close the gap to just three but the Rangers were unable to come any closer as Cayli Sadler retired three of the next four batters to end the contest.
Courtney Ellingson suffered the loss, pitching four innings and allowing four earned runs while
Amber Ramos handled the final two innings, striking out six of the eight batters she faced. UMD's Sam Hartmann tallied the win, striking out three in five innings of work before giving way to Sadler.
In the nightcap,
Kalli Gosser ignited some offensive fireworks in the second inning to give the Rangers an early lead but the Bulldogs stormed back to steal the win and complete the sweep.
Megan Holderby led off the second inning with a base hit down the left field line while Samantha Wells drew a walk to get on base. A
Samantha Magruder single loaded the bases before Gosser blasted a triple to right field to clear the bases and give the Green and White the 3-0 lead. UMD answered with three runs of its own in the fourth inning to deadlock the score before pushing across the winning run in the sixth inning off a Becky Smith RBI double.
Dundee fanned nine batters and issued just two walks but was saddled with the loss, tossing all seven innings for the Rangers. Sadler notched the game two win, striking out 11 of the 17 batters she faced in her five innings of action.
The Rangers remain indoors the rest of the week, traveling south to Rosemont, Illinois to take on Grand Valley State University and the University of Findlay on Friday at the Rosemont Dome.
