(Nov. 1, 2015)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's basketball team was unable to fend off a fourth quarter charge from Division I Loyola University Chicago on Saturday afternoon, allowing the hosts to rally for the 65-54 victory in an exhibition match at Gentile Arena.
Â
UW-Parkside dominated the glass, owning a 60-35 rebounding advantage, including a 21-13 edge in offensive boards but was sabotaged by 34 turnovers that turned into 27 points for host Loyola.
Â
The Ramblers came out of the gate swinging, collecting the opening eight points of the game while closing the first quarter on a 11-2 run, enjoying a 12-point buffer after 10 minutes of action.
Â
Loyola scored the opening point of the second quarter but it was all Rangers after that as UW-Parkside outscored the Ramblers 20-10 over the final 10 minutes of the first half. UW-Parkside trailed 27-17 with 2:28 left in the half before scoring the next eight points to close within two with 1:13 remaining. Back-to-back buckets from
Jessica Prince and
Lauren Boerger sparked the rally before getting a trey from Conniff and a free throw courtesy of
Kauri Jensen. Loyola answered with a layup but a pair of free throws from Conniff closed the gap to 29-27 heading into the halftime intermission.
Â
Loyola staked a seven-point lead three minutes into the second half, but Parkside scored 12 of the next 16 points, seizing its first lead of the day with 3:33 left in the third quarter on a pair of
Tara Knapstein free throws. The Ramblers quickly reestablished a lead but a
Stephanie Furr jumper with one second left gave the Rangers a 48-46 lead heading into the final stanza.
Â
A Conniff three gave UW-Parkside a 51-48 edge with just over six minutes left but Loyola scored 13 of the next 14 points, establishing a nine-point buffer with two minutes to play and never looked back en route to the 11-point victory.
Â
Conniff led the Ranger offensive, sinking four three-pointers and ending the afternoon with 20 points. Prince finished one point and one board shy of a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds while Furr had seven points and a team-best 12 rebounds.
Â
Nieka Wheeler led Loyola's scoring charge with 14 points while Taylor Manuel added 13 points and six boards off the bench.
Â
The Rangers return to the hardwood on Friday, Nov. 13, taking on Western Michigan University in the team's final tune-up before opening the regular season.
