(Jan. 24, 2015)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's basketball squad utilized a 12-0 run late in the game to seize the lead on Saturday afternoon, earning its seventh consecutive win by defeating host Bellarmine University 63-58 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division clash inside Knights Hall.
The Knights (8-9, 3-6 GLVC) opened a five-point lead with 5:51 remaining in the game before
Kristin Conniff and
Brittney Fair collaborated for the next 12 points, establishing a 55-48 advantage for the visiting Rangers (14-4, 7-2 GLVC) with 2:12 remaining. UW-Parkside's buffer was extended to nine off a
Gaby Bronson layup with 77 ticks left but the hosts battled to within a possession at 61-58 off a Raven Merriweather trey with 15 seconds left. Conniff sealed the game with two free throws with 12 seconds left to extend the team's win streak to seven.
Bellarmine led by as many as six points in the opening stanza but the Rangers netted the final four points of the first half, enjoying a 27-22 lead after 20 minutes of play.
UW-Parkside extended its advantage to eight with 18:12 left off a
Sarah Mlachnik three but BU countered with an 8-0 run of its own, deadlocking the score at 36. The Knights pulled ahead and owned a 48-43 edge with 5:51 left before Conniff and Fair poured on the next 12 to give Parkside the lead for good in a game featuring five lead changes and two ties.
Conniff paced the Rangers with 19 points, netting 10 of her points from the charity stripe. Fair added 12 points off the bench while
Stephanie Furr added nine.
Tara Knapstein had six points and a team-high 10 boards.
Morgan Clemons led BU with 17 points and nine rebounds while Beth Bowers contributed 14.
UW-Parkside dominated the paint with a 30-18 edge in points while scoring 14 of the 16 fast break buckets of the contest. The Rangers shot just 35.9 percent (23-for-64) from the floor but limited the Knights to shooting a paltry 31.1 percent (19-for-61).
The Rangers return to the hardwood on Thursday, hosting the University of Indianapolis with tipoff inside DeSimone Gymnasium slated for 5:30 p.m.
