(Jan. 2, 2015)-- A huge disparity in free throw attempts proved to be the University of Wisconsin-Parkside's Achilles' heel on Friday evening, suffering a 78-66 setback to host Truman State University in a Great Lakes Valley Conference women's basketball clash inside Pershing Arena.
The Bulldogs (8-2, 2-0 GLVC) never trailed in the contest, finishing with more made free thows (33) than the Rangers (7-4, 0-2 GLVC) had attempts (22).
Host Truman tallied the game's opening two points at the charity stripe before the Rangers netted the score with a pair of free throws from
Gaby Bronson.The Bulldogs tallied the next five points and owned a lead the rest of the game. UW-Parkside trailed by just a point at 14-13 with 12:35 remaining in the opening stanza but Truman utilized an 18-6 spurt to stake a 13-point buffer. The Bulldogs enjoyed a double-digit buffer the rest of the half, taking a 40-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Truman swelled its lead to 18 points five minutes into the second half but a 14-4 Ranger run closed the gap to single digits at 56-48 with 9:13 left in the game after a
Tara Knapstein three-point play. UW-Parkside was unable to come any closer in the 12-point defeat.
Bronson led the Rangers with 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists, collecting nine of her points at the charity stripe.
Stephanie Furr chipped in nine points while
Kristin Conniff added seven.
Courtney Strait paced all scorers with 21 points for the Bulldogs while Michalina Tomczak netted a double-double with 14 points and 12 boards. Allie Norton was the third TSU player in double figures, dropping 18 points on the night.
The Bulldogs made 43 trips to the free throw line, hitting 33 of their attempts (76.7 percent) while the Rangers made just 13 of their 22 attempts (59.1 percent). Parkside controlled the paint, owning a 31-18 advantage in points in the paint while the Ranger reserves outscored the Bulldog bench by a commanding 32-14 margin.
Parkside caps off its epic season-opening 15 game road swing on Sunday afternoon, taking on GLVC rival Quincy University at 1 p.m.
