(Sept. 5, 2014)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball squad dropped its opening two matches at the Keweenaw Classic on Friday, surrendering an early lead and falling 3-1 (22-25, 25-12, 25-20, 27-25) to Winona State University before stumbling 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-23) to third-ranked University of Minnesota-Duluth inside SDC Gymnasium.
Against Winona (1-0), the Rangers (1-2) tallied seven of the final 11 points in set one, breaking an 18-18 deadlock and claiming the 25-22 win. The Warriors responded with a 25-12 win in set two before capturing set three by a 25-20 count. In set four the Rangers extended the set but was ultimately unable to claim the win, with a kill and an attack error giving the Warriors the 27-25 win to claim the match.
Jackie Langer paced Parkside with 14 kills while
Rebecca Roembke added 13 and
Jeni Heller added nine.
Megan Pekarek led the way with 37 assists while defensively
Jessi Mainczyk accrued a team-high 24 digs.
Against the third-ranked Bulldogs, UW-Parkside tallied the match's opening point before UMD seized control, scoring the next three points and never trailing en route to a 25-13 set win. Set two was tied at 15 and the Rangers were within a point at 21-20 before the Bulldogs four of the final five points for the 25-21 win.
The Rangers capitalized on several Bulldog miscues early in set three with a Heller kill and four straight attack errors giving UW-Parkside an 8-4 edge. UMD stormed back with 10 of the next 11 points, owning 14-9 edge. The Rangers didn't back down tying the contest at 21. The two sides traded points before two kills by Maddy Siroin gave UMD the 25-23 win to sweep the match.
Roembke led the Rangers offensively with nine kills while Pekarek had a team-best five blocks and 22 assists. Mainczyk again led the defensive effort with 11 digs while Langer and
Meghan Conley both chipped in eight.
The Rangers close out the Keweenaw Classic on Saturday, facing Bemidji State University at 8 a.m. before squaring off against Upper Iowa University at 2 p.m.
