(Sept. 5, 2014)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's soccer squad outlasted its opponent and Mother Nature in Friday's season opener, posting a 3-0 victory over Northwood University in a lightning plagued non-conference showdown at Wood Road Field.
The opening kick was delayed nearly 40 minutes due to lightning but the delay had little effect on the Rangers (1-0) with
Bailey Reed netting her first collegiate goal just over three minutes into the game off a
Taylor Schiffer-Jander assist. UW-Parkside owned a 1-0 advantage before the game entered another lightning delay in the 18th minute.
The Rangers doubled their advantage in the 34th minute with an
Ashley Meyer header slipping past the keeper after
Niekie Pellens served the ball into the box from about 30 yards out. Three minutes later it was
Emily Konior with a brillant free kick from 20 yards out, upping the home side's advantage to 3-0.
Parkside dominated the Timberwolves (0-1), owning a 24-2 edge in shots including a 14-0 advantage in shots on goal.
Anchored by a strong effort from the defensive backline,
Mallory Geurts earned the clean sheet, logging all 90 minutes in goal. Her counterpart, Julie Shields, made 11 saves in the losing effort.
The Rangers close out their non-conference slate on Sunday, welcoming the University of Charleston to Wood Road Field. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m.
