(Sept. 4, 2014)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball squad lifted the lid on the 2014 season in style, downing host Michigan Tech University 3-1 (25-23, 24-26, 25-17, 25-18) on Thursday evening in a non-conference showdown inside SDC Gymnasium.

In the opening set, the score was deadlocked at 13 before the visiting Rangers (1-0) rattled off five straight to post an 18-13 advantage. UW-Parkside led the rest of the way as a
Jeni Heller kill ended the set 25-23 in favor of the Rangers. The Huskies (0-1) scored the final two points of set two to squeak out a 26-24 win before the Rangers regrouped in set three, claiming the final four points for the 25-17 win.

Set four was tied 17-17 before Parkside took control, scoring eight of the final nine points to claim the 25-18 set victory and secure the match win.

Jackie Langer and
Megan Pekarek shined in their Ranger debuts. Langer paced the squad with 14 kills and 12 digs while Pekarek posted a team-leading 41 assists. Heller tallied 10 kills while
Rebecca Roembke added eight kills and 12 digs.
Sonja Burnson was a thorn in the Huskies' side all night, collecting a match-high 10 blocks (one solo, nine assists).

The Rangers remain in Houghton, returning to SDC Gymnasium tomorrow for the Keweenaw Classic. UW-Parkside begins the day at 10:30 a.m. against Winona State University before facing third-ranked University of Minnesota-Duluth at 4:30 p.m.
