(Sept. 28, 2014)-- A goal in each half carried the University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's soccer squad to its second straight road win, downing Great Lakes Valley Conference rival University of Illinois Springfield 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Kiwanis Stadium.
UW-Parkside's (4-4, 2-4 GLVC)
Edwin Gomez opened the scoring, collecting a ricochet off the post and driving the ball past the keeper in the 16th minute for the 1-0 advantage. It was the senior's first goal of the season as the Green and White took a 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half
Joe Elwell tacked on an insurance goal in the 77th minute, finding the back of the net for the first time in his collegiate career off a pass from
Evan Garcia.
UIS (2-6, 0-6 GLVC) owned an 11-5 edge in shots in the opening stanza but the tide turned in the second half with the visiting Rangers owning a 5-3 edge in shots.
Marcos Perez turned away seven shots on the afternoon in 90 minutes of work, collecting his second straight road shutout. The Prairie Stars' Kyle Hamilton made one save and was saddled with the loss, allowing a pair of goals in 90 minutes of action.
UW-Parkside returns to the pitch on Wednesday, hosting Oakland City University at 2 p.m. inside Wood Road Field in the team's final non-conference game of the season.
