(Sept. 20, 2014)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball squad made its home debut in style on Saturday afternoon, rolling past Maryville University 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-14) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference showdown inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
The visiting Saints tallied the match's opening point and roared out to a 3-1 advantage in set one before the Rangers fought back, tying the game at 4-4. The two teams traded point before UW-Parkside rattled off four in a row to secure a 10-7 lead. The Rangers never trailed the rest of the way, earning a 25-18 victory in the opening set. UW-Parkside led wire-to-wire in both the second and third sets to earn the team's second consecutive win.
The Rangers scored the opening five points in set two off the serve of
Megan Pekarek and eventually built a 20-11 advantage. Maryville battled back, pulling within three at 23-20 and again at 24-21 before a Pekarek kill gave the hosts the 25-21 win.
UW-Parkside notched the first four points of set three and raced out to an early 10-3 edge. The Rangers maintained at least a five-point buffer the rest of the way, cruising to the 25-14 set win to claim the match in straight sets.
Jeni Heller led the Ranger attack, posting nine kills while
Jackie Langer tallied seven along with seven digs and four blocks. Pekarek had a match-high 29 assists in addition to three aces while
Jessi Mainczyk finished with 20 digs.
Meghan Conley collected 11 digs along with six kills.
The Rangers continue their homestand on Sunday, welcoming the University of Missouri-Saint Louis to DeSimone Gymnasium with first serve slated for 1 p.m.
