(Apr. 9, 2014)-- Playing inside the state for the first time all season, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball squad was unable to keep pace with the Division I hosts, falling 12-1 and 12-2 to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay on Wednesday afternoon.
In the opener, the Phoenix (16-7) piled on eight runs in the bottom of the first before plating four more in the second to seize and early 12-0 advantage. The Rangers (2-20) got on the board in the top of the third with
Colleen Cummings getting on base with a two-out double to left center field. Cummings scored the next at-bat as
Kalli Gosser singled up the middle to get visiting UW-Parkside on the board. Neither team was able to score the rest of mercy-rule shortened contest.
Kira Cooper and Sam Magruder led the Rangers at the plate, finishing two-for-three and two-for-two respectively. UW-Parkside tallied seven hits on the afternoon but was unable to advance runners once on base, stranding six runners throughout the contest.
Carly Dundee absorbed the loss in the circle, pitching the first inning and yielding three earned runs.
Kristin Kleinmeyer finished off the final three frames, fanning three batters and allowing four earned runs. Ashley Nannemann collected the win for Green Bay, allowing one earned run and striking out two in 3 1/3 innings of work.
In game two, Parkside surged to an early 2-0 lead before the Phoenix scored the final 12 runs of the game, shutting down the Rangers the rest of the way in the five inning game.
Cooper led off game two with a double, advancing to second on a fielder's choice before scoring on an error by the catcher. Gosser doubled the Ranger lead with a single to right center field, scoring Cummings.
Green Bay quickly reasserted itself in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs to grab the lead. The Phoenix added four in the second inning while notching a pair of runs in the third and three more in the fourth.
Two of the Rangers' four hits in game two came off the bat of Gosser who finished two-for-three with an RBI.
Hayley Schneider was tagged with the loss, pitching the first 1 2/3 innings while UWGB's Heather Sanderson earned the win, striking out seven in 4 1/3 innings of action.
The Rangers return to the diamond on Friday, hosting Rockhurst University in a noon doubleheader at the Case Complex.
