ROMEOVILLE, Ill. (Apr. 6, 2014)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball team came up empty handed for the second straight day, dropping a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference games to the University of Southern Indiana on Sunday at the Lewis Softball Field. The Rangers stumbled 10-1 in the opener before suffering a 6-4 setback in a marathon nine-inning affair to close the series.

In the opener it was a seven-run outburst in the fifth inning that derailed the Rangers (2-18, 2-14 GLVC), falling in the 10-1 mercy rule shortened contest. The Screaming Eagles (19-12, 11-11 GLVC) struck first, plating three runs in the third inning. UW-Parkside got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with Kira Cooper scoring after Kalli Gosser safely reached base on a fielding error. The score remained 3-1 until the fifth where Southern Indiana utilized six hits and two errors to push across seven runs to enact the mercy rule.

Gosser led the Rangers at the plate, finishing two-for-three with an RBI.

Carly Dundee suffered the loss, pitching the firts 4 1/3 innings and allowing five earned runs. Brooke Harnening collected the win, striking out four and allowing no earned runs in the complete game effort.

In the nightcap, the Rangers surged to an early 4-0 lead but was unable to hold on down the stretch, stumbling 6-4 in extra innings.

Cooper led off the first with a home run blast over the right field wall before Alexis Simone went yard just three batters later as Parkside staked a 2-0 lead after just one inning of play. Therese Jender batted in Lexi Sotiros in the fourth while a wild pitch plated Kirsten Luevano in the fifth, giving the Rangers' a 4-0 buffer.

USI began chipping into the lead in the sixth, scoring a pair of unearned runs before netted the contest at 4-4 in the seventh with two more runs. Neither team was able to generate a run in the eighth while the Screaming Eagles manufactured two scores in the ninth, pushing across a pair with two outs off a MacKenzi Dorsam bases loaded single to steal the win.

Pacing the Ranger offense in game two was Gosser and Simone, both finishing two-for-four at the dish.

Kristin Kleinmeyer made the start and tossed 6 2/3 innings, striking out five and earning the no decision as Luevano tossed the final 2 1/3 innings, striking out four but was saddled with the loss. Sarah Owens tallied the win, handling the final 2 2/3 innings and fanning four of the eight batters she faced.

The Rangers are back on the diamond on Wednesday, trekking up northward to face Division I University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in a non-conference tilt slated to begin at 2 p.m.
