(Apr. 5, 2014)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball team was an out away from winning the opener before suffering a heartbreaking 2-1 setback in eight innings to Bellarmine University while stumbling 5-0 in the nightcap in a Great Lakes Valley Conference twinbill on Saturday at the Lewis University.
UW-Parkside's
Carly Dundee was pitching a gem in the opener, striking out five and yielding just three hits as the Rangers enjoyed a 1-0 lead with two outs in the eighth. A Ranger fielding error allowed the Knights to tie the contest forcing extra innings. In the eighth, Bellarmine cranked out a pair of hits to push across a run before striking out the side in the bottom of the frame to steal the win.
Dundee was saddled with the complete game loss, allowing just five hits and one earned run while walking two. Ally Foster tallied the win for Bellarmine, pitching the final two innings and striking out all six batters she faced.
BU righthander Foster stole the show in game two, tossing a complete game two-hitter, striking out 12 and allowing just one walk. BU tallied single runs in the first, second and fourth innings before adding two in the fifth for the final 5-0 count.
Hayley Schneider suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs in 4 2/3 innings of work before making way for
Kristin Kleinmeyer who tossed 2 1/3 innings of scoreless ball.
Saturday's games were slated to be played at UW-Parkside's Case Complex but an unplayable surface forced the series southward to Lewis University's home diamond.
The Rangers return to Romeoville tomorrow, squaring off against the University of Southern Indiana at 2:30 p.m.
