(Apr. 27, 2014)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball squad sent its seven seniors out in style on Sunday, piling on 24 runs over the course of the doubleheader, sweeping Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division rival McKendree University at the Case Complex to finish out the 2014 season. The Rangers edged the Bearcats 11-9 in the opener before blasting the visitors 13-0 in a mercy rule shortened game two.
The Rangers (8-30, 5-25 GLVC) came out swinging in game one, jumping out to a 7-0 lead after just one inning of action.
Kirsten Luevano drove in
Kira Cooper for the game's first run before getting RBI singles from
Samantha Magruder,
Diana Gordon and
Lexi Sotiros.
Hayley Schneider blasted her first career home run, clearing the left center field fence and plating three runs for the 7-0 advantage.
The Bearcats (17-31, 10-24 GLVC) answered over the next few frames, pushing across single runs in the second and third before tying the game in the fourth inning with a five run outburst.
Luevano got the Rangers back on top with a two run bomb in the fourth inning, scoring
Colleen Cummings who led off the frame with an infield single. McKendree equalized the score with a pair of runs in the sixth but Parkside had the last laugh, plating a pair of runs off a Gordon single to center field for the final 11-9 count.
Cummings paced the Rangers in the opener, finishing four-for-four while scoring two runs. Luevano, Magruder, Gordon and Sotiros all finished with a pair of hits as the Rangers' pounded out 14 hits in game one.
Carly Dundee tallied the win, handling the final 3 2/3 innings and striking out four. McKendree's Susan Goetze was saddled with the loss, allowing two earned runs and striking out four in 4 1/3 innings of action.
In game two, a Luevano RBI single gave the hosts a 1-0 advantage after one inning of play before exploding for 10 runs in the second inning en route to the 13-0 mercy rule win.
Sotiros sparked the offensive surge in the second inning as the senior belted her first career home run, clearing the left field fence and staking the Rangers the 2-0 edge. Cummings doubled to center field, scoring a pair of runs before
Kalli Gosser cleared the bases with a three-run shot. Luevano went yard the next at bat, her second home run of the afternoon before
Alexis Simone homered, driving in three for the 11-0 lead.
UW-Parkside tacked on two more runs in the fourth, getting RBI singles from Cummings and pinch hitter Meghan Holderby.
Cooper, Cummings, Gosser and Luevano all finished with multiple hits as the Rangers collected 11 hits on the afternoon.
Kristin Kleinmeyer collected the complete game win, finishing her career by striking out one and allowing just two hits in the shutout.
