SOMERS, Wis. (Apr. 26, 2014)-- Unhinged by one big inning in each game, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball team suffered a pair of setbacks on Saturday at the Case Complex, falling 6-3 and 6-0 to Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division rival University of Illinois Springfield.

In the opener, the Prairie Stars (25-22, 16-16 GLVC) piled on four runs in the first inning, utilizing three doubles and five base hits during the outburst. The Rangers (6-30, 5-23 GLVC) got on the board in the bottom of the third with a Colleen Cummings groundout scoring Diana Gordon. Gordon reached base by drawing a leadoff walk before advancing to third on a Kira Cooper double to left field.

UIS pushed across another run in the fifth inning. Parkside threatened in the bottom of the frame and had the tying run at the plate with one out after loading the bases but was unable to convert with UIS inducing a flyout and notching a strikeout to escape the inning. The Rangers knifed into the Prairie Star advantage in the sixth, pushing across a pair of scores on a Gordon double to right center field, scoring Lexi Sotiros and Samantha Magruder to cut the gap to just two runs. Illinois Springfield added an insurance score in the top of the seventh to conclude the scoring.

Gordon paced the Ranger offense, finishing a perfect two-for-two from the plate with a pair of RBIs while Cooper was two-for-three.

Carly Dundee was saddled with the defeat, striking out one in the complete game effort. Illinois Springfield's Cheyanne Bowman claimed the complete game win, allowing three earned runs and striking out seven.

In game two, UIS got on the board in the third inning, courtesy of a sacrifice fly before piling on five runs in the fifth inning.

Kristin Kleinmeyer was tagged with the loss, allowing five earned runs in four innings of work. The southpaw led the Rangers at the plate, accounting for two of the team's four hits in game two. Alex Smith earned the game two victory for UIS, striking out five in the complete game effort.

The Rangers close out the season on Sunday, taking on McKendree University in a GLVC Doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
