Softball Sweeps Miners in GLVC Twinbill

ROLLA, Mo. (Apr. 19, 2014)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball team collected its first doubleheader sweep of the season on Saturday afternoon, disposing of Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Missouri University S&T 4-1 in the opener before blanking the hosts 1-0 in game two, extended the Rangers' win streak to three games.
 
In game one, the Rangers (5-24, 5-18 GLVC) struck first, building an early lead en route to the 4-1 victory. A Kira Cooper RBI groundout scored Lexi Sotiros in the third inning before a Colleen Cummings single up the middle in the fifth inning plated Carly Dundee and Diana Gordon, giving the visitors the 3-0 lead. Samantha Magruder singled in an insurance run in the sixth while the Miners (11-30, 6-21 GLVC) broke up the shutout in the bottom of the inning, plating their lone run of the contest.
 
Cummings and Dundee led the Ranger offense, both collecting a pair of hits as UW-Parkside outhit the hosts by a 9-4 margin.
 
Kristin Kleinmeyer claimed the win in the circle, striking out two and allowing no earned runs in the complete game effort. Becca Strope was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs in 4 2/3 innings of action.
 
In game two, one run was all that was necessary for the Rangers to escape Rolla with a series sweep.
 
The game's lone score came off the bat of Kirsten Luevano in the top of the second inning as the senior belted her team-leading fifth home run of the season.
 
Cooper and Magruder paced the Ranger offensive attack in game two, both collecting a pair of hits.
 
Dundee picked up the complete game shutout victory, striking out one and issuing two walks in seven innings of work. S&T's Bethany Rader absorbed the loss, allowing one earned run and four hits.
 
UW-Parkside returns to the diamond on Monday afternoon, taking a breathier from GLVC play with a non-conference twinbill against Cardinal Stritch University. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. at the Case Complex.
