Unearned Runs Thwart Rangers on Wednesday

SOMERS, Wis. (Apr. 16, 2014)-- Unearned runs cost the University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball team dearly on a blustery cold Wednesday afternoon, falling 7-3 to Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division rival Lewis University in the opener before game two at the Case Complex was suspended with the score tied 1-1 after seven innings.

In the opener, all seven of the visiting Flyers (14-20, 8-13 GLVC) runs were unearned as the Rangers (2-23, 2-17 GLVC) ended up on the worng end of a 7-3 decision.

Lewis held a 3-0 advantage after 5 1/2 innings, plating runs in the first, second and sixth innings. The Rangers equalized the score in the bottom of the sixth with Samantha Magruder blasting her first career home run, plating KIrsten Luevano and Kalli Gosser to tie the game. Lewis pulled away in the seventh, piling on four unearned scores. A flyout plated the go-ahead run before a single gave Lewis the 5-3 edge. Brittany Russell belted a two-out triple to clear the bases, giving the Flyers the 7-3 edge.

Colleen Cummings led the Rangers at the plate with a two-for-four effort while Magruder tallied three RBIs.

Carly Dundee was saddled with the loss, tossing 6 2/3 innings, allowing zero earned runs and striking out three. The Flyers' Kelly Bowler earned the win, tossing the final 1 1/3 innings and retiring all four batters she faced.

In game two, Alexis Simone belted a two-out home run in the bottom of the second inning, staking the Rangers an early 1-0 lead. Lewis tied the contest in the fifth, singling in a run to knot the score. The game remained deadlocked after seven innings, forcing the game to be suspended as darkness was settling in. The game will resume on Tuesday at 1 p.m. before the regularly scheduled twinbill against Parkside and Lewis in Romeoville, Ill.

The Rangers head to Springfield, Mo., on Friday, taking on host Drury University in a GLVC interdivisional clash.
