RENSSELAER, Ind. (Mar. 31, 2014)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball team piled on seven unanswered runs to secure a 7-1 victory in game one of Monday's Great Lakes Valley Conference twinbill against Saint Joseph's College but was unable to keep pace with hosts in game two, suffering a heartbreaking 13-12 setback in extra innings to finish with a series split.

In the opener, it was the host Pumas (11-13, 8-6 GLVC) striking first before the Rangers (2-14, 2-10 GLVC) rattled off seven straight runs to secure the victory.

St. Joseph's opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning. The Rangers answered in the top of the second with a Carly Dundee double to right field scoring Colleen Cummings to tie the game at 1-1. An RBI single from Cummings and an RBI double from Dundee pushed the Ranger edge to 3-1 in the fourth before UW-Parkside piled on four runs in the seventh.

Dundee led off the seventh with a double, later scoring on a Puma error. Kirsten Luevano belted in the frame's second run while Cummings drew a bases loaded walk to up the Ranger edge to 6-1. Another Puma miscue allowed Kira Cooper to score, giving the visitors the 7-1 buffer.

UW-Parkside pounded out 10 hits in the contest with Dundee leading the way with three hits and two RBIs. Alexis Simone and Cooper each collected a pair of hits while Cummings drove in two runs.

Dundee picked up the complete game victory in the circle, striking out three and allowing just one earned run in seven innings of action. SJC's Jessica Cates suffered the loss, striking out five and allowing seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.

In the nightcap, it was the Pumas once again securing an early advantage scoring two runs in the bottom of the first before pushing across four more in the second inning.

Luevano put the Rangers on the board in the top of the third, driving in Cooper and Samantha Magruder to dent the Pumas advantage and pull within four. SJC responded with two of its own in the bottom of the frame while the squads traded runs before Parkside exploded for five runs in the fifth inning to pull within a run.

Simone sparked the fifth inning rally with a leadoff single. Pinch runner Emily Hastings took second after Cummings drew a walk before scoring on a Diana Gordon single. Cooper belted in two more runs later in frame before a Kalli Gosser base hit to center field plated two more, pushing the Rangers within one run at 9-8.

SJC added a single run in the bottom of the fifth before UW-Parkside tied the game at 10 with two runs in the sixth.

Simone led off the inning by drawing a walk before Magruder doubled in her and Dundee to knot the score.

The Pumas regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth with another run but Parkside countered, seizing the lead with two runs in the top of the seventh, getting RBI singles from Cummings and Dundee.

SJC tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, scoring on a wild pitch to force extra innings.

In extras, Saint Joseph's loaded the bases with two outs thanks to three straight walks before scoring the winning run on a Ranger fielding error.

Cooper paced the Rangers at the plate, finishing four-for-six with two RBIs while Magruder was two-for-four with three RBIs.

Hayley Schneider was tagged with the loss, pitching 5 1/3 innings in relief. SJC's Megan Schwartzengraber tallied the win, pitching 5 2/3 innings and striking out two.

The Rangers return to the diamond on Saturday, facing Bellarmine University in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
