INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Mar. 30, 2014)-- Derek Tuttle drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth in game two, helping the University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball team salvage a doubleheader split with Great Lakes Valley Conference nemesis University of Indianapolis on Sunday at Greyhound Park. The Rangers fell 3-1 in game one before rebounding with a dramatic 3-2 victory in extra innings in the nightcap.
Stranding 10 runners on base, the Rangers (5-12, 3-7 GLVC) fell 3-1 in the opener.
Host UIndy (11-12, 6-4 GLVC) broke open a scoreless affair in the third inning, pushing across a run before doubling its advantage with another run in thr top of the seventh. The Rangers responded in the bottom of the seventh, netting a run in what turned out to be the squad's lone score of the game.
Kris Zarek led off the inning with a single to center field, advancing to second after
Nick Janssen was awarded first on catcher's interference.
Zach Cunningham bunted Zarek over to third before scoring on a throwing error.
The Greyhounds tallied an insurance run in the top of the ninth and shut down Parkside in the bottom of the frame for the 3-1 final score.
Five Rangers collected hits in the game with
DJ Peltz leading the way with a two-for-four performance.
Josh Serio pitched all nine innings for the Rangers, absorbing the loss despite striking out eight and allowing just two earned runs. UIndy's Matthew Kaplanis claimed the win, striking out three in six innings of work while Bob Kwekel tallied the save, striking out two in the ninth inning.
In the nightcap, it was the Rangers striking first, pushing across a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Eric DuCharme kicked off the inning with an infield single before scoring on a Peltz base hit. Janssen plated Peltz later in the frame, hitting a two-out single to right field, giving Parkside the 2-0 edge.
Two Ranger errors in the sixth allowed the host Hounds to knot the score at 2-2. Neither squad was able to muster a run in the seventh, forcing extra innings.
In extras, it was
Derek Tuttle emerging as the hero, collecting an RBI fielder's choice to end the game as
Patrick Cottrell touched home plate for the decisive score in the bottom of the ninth inning. Cottrell served as a pinch runner for
Jake Kolasinski after the freshman reached on a UIndy error to begin the inning.
UW-Parkside cranked out nine hits in game two with Cunningham, Peltz and Tuttle each finishing with a pair of hits.
Joseph Plaud earned the victory, pitching the final three innings. The righthander struck out two and yielded no hits in relief of
Cole Kroncke. Kroncke earned the no decision after striking out six and allowing two runs in six innings of work. UIndy's Scott Mitchell suffered the loss, yielding one hit and issuing one walk in the ninth.
The Rangers and Greyhounds finish off the series tomorrow with a doubleheader getting underway at 12 p.m. (Eastern Time).
