KIRKSVILLE, Mo. (Mar. 17, 2014)-- It took a day longer than usual but the University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball team finally closed out its series against Truman State University on Monday afternoon, splitting a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference games. The Rangers seized the 5-3 victory in the opener before falling 6-1 to close the series.
The Rangers (3-8, 1-2 GLVC) and Bulldogs (6-7, 3-1 GLVC) were slated to close the series on Sunday before inclement weather pushed the final day's games back a day.
The Rangers (3-8) secured the opening two runs of the contest.
Juan Bowers opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, belting a double to left field, scoring
Zach Cunningham. UW-Parkside doubled its advantage in the third, with a Cunningham fielders choice bringing in
Ryan Ruediger.
The Bulldogs plated two runs in the fourth inning before seizing the lad in the sixth with a Blake Deaton RBI single giving the hosts a 3-2 edge. Cunningham responded in the seventh with a two RBI single down the left field line, scoring
DJ Peltz and
Derek Tuttle while
Kris Zarek added a two run cushion later in the frame, stealing third and scoring on an arrant throw by the Truman catcher to give the visitors the 5-3 edge.
Bowers paced the Rangers, collecting two of the squad's five hits, finishing two-for-three at the dish while Cunningham drove in a trio of runs.
Mario Samuel collected the complete game win, tossing all seven innings and fanning seven batters while yielding just three earned runs. TSU's Cody Gardner absorbed the loss, tossing the seventh and allowing three runs.
In the nightcap, Truman struck first, plating a pair of runs in the third inning. A
Shaun Lena single cut the gap to just a run in the top of the fourth before the Bulldogs extended the buffer with a single run in the fourth. Truman added three more in the sixth en route to the 6-1 victory.
DJ Peltz and
Jake Kolasinski paced the Ranger offense, both finishing two-for-four at the dish.
John Perez was saddled with the defeat, yielding five earned runs in 5 1/3 inning of labor while TSU's Tyler Spencer tallied the win, allowing one run in six inning of work. Alex Hoffmann collected the save, striking out two and allowing no hits in the final three frames of the game.
The Rangers return to the diamond on Saturday, facing the University of Missouri-Saint Louis in a four-game set.
