QUINCY, Ill. (Mar. 15, 2014)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball squad was unable to match the firepower of host Quincy University on Saturday afternoon, falling 8-6 and 8-3 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference twinbill at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.
The Rangers (0-8, 0-4 GLVC) drew first blood in the opener with
Kirsten Luevano belting a three-run home run. Luevano's blast, her second of the season, cleared the center field fence and plated
Diana Gordon and
Colleen Cummings, giving UW-Parkside the 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning.
Quincy (11-11, 3-3 GLVC) responded in the top of the second, blasting two home runs and plating six runs to seize the 6-3 advantage.
Kalli Gosser singled in a run in the third,
Lexi Sotiros collected an RBI base knock in the sixth while Carlee Dundee walked in pinch runner
Therese Jender to tie the game at 6-6. Quincy's Jessica Grimes belted a two-run home run in the top of the seventh as the hosts held on for the 8-6 win.
Luevano led the Ranger offense, finishing two-for-four at the plate with three RBIs while Sotiros was two-for-four.
Hayley Schneider was saddled with the loss for UW-Parkside, allowing six earned runs in one inning of work. Dundee logged the final six innings for the Green and White, striking out four and allowing just two earned runs. Murphi Armstrong tallied the win for Quincy, striking out four in the complete game effort.
In the nightcap, it was a four-run outburst in the second inning that proved the difference-maker as host Quincy cruised to the 8-3 victory to earn the series sweep.
Alanna Viken opened the scoring blasting a grand slam over the center field fence in the second inning, giving the Hawks the 4-0 lead. Quincy manufactured another run in the fifth to extend the advantage to 5-0 before piling on three more in the seventh off the long ball to stake an 8-0 lead.
Pinch hitter
Alexis Simone belted a two-run blast in the bottom of the seventh, scoring
Kira Cooper while a Gordon single to center field scored Sotiros, closing the gap to 8-3 but the Rangers were unable to do any more damage in the loss.
Cooper finished two-for-three to lead the Rangers at the plate while Sotiros finished two-for-four.Â
Kristin Kleinmeyer suffered the loss, tossing 6 1/3 innings and striking out six while allowing seven earned runs. Rachel Scrum collected the complete game win, striking out two and allowing three earned runs.
The Rangers continue their road swing next Saturday, heading south to Lebanon, Ill., taking on GLVC East Division rival McKendree University.
