KIRKSVILLE, Mo. (Mar. 15, 2014)-- A walkoff single in the opener put the University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball squad on the wrong side of a 5-4 decision before suffering a 7-0 setback in the nightcap to host Truman State University in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opening doubleheader for both teams.
In the opener, the host Bulldogs (5-6, 2-0 GLVC) belted a walkoff single with one out to secure the 5-4 win. Paul Trenhaile led off the bottom of the ninth, reaching base on a Ranger fielding error before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. Truman's Chris Zrostlik drove in the decisive score the next at-bat, hitting a single through the left side.
Truman State struck first, plating a run in the bottom of the first inning. A single, a walk and two hit batters brought in the opening score, giving the Bulldogs the 1-0 edge. The Rangers (2-7, 0-2 GLVC) tied the contest in the second with
Eric DuCharme leading off the inning with a double. DuCharme advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a
Kris Zarek single to left field.
Truman State regained the lead in the third, grinding out five hits and scoring two runs before adding one more in the fourth inning for the 4-1 advantage.
DJ Peltz went yard to lead off the sixth, clearing the left field fence before Parkside added a pair of runs in the seventh to knot the score.
Patrick Cottrell singled in DuCharme, who reached base on a walk before Peltz scored from second base courtesy of a wild pitch and a Bulldog throwing error.
Peltz and DuCharme paced the Ranger offense, each finishing two-for-four at the plate.
Joseph Plaud suffered the loss on the mound despite allowing just one hit and no earned runs over the final five innings of play in relief of starter
Cole Kroncke. Truman's Cody Gardner picked up the win, pitching the ninth and striking out two.
In the nightcap it was a six run outburst in the bottom of the sixth that paved the way for a 7-0 Truman State win to sweep the doubleheader. Truman pushed across a run in the bottom of the first courtesy of an RBI single from Jarod Hahn.
The Rangers had the Bulldogs on lockdown over the next four innings, allowing just two hits during that stretch before Truman poured on six runs off five hits and one error in the bottom of the sixth inning to conclude the scoring.
Josh Serio suffered the loss, striking out six and yielding four earned runs in 5 1/3 innings of work. Mark Roberts claimed the complete game win, striking out two in the shutout.
The two squads return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon for another doubleheader with first pitch slated for 12 p.m.
