SOMERS, Wis. (Feb. 8, 2014)-- Sinking a season-high 11 three-pointers, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's basketball team pleased the Alumni Day crowd inside DeSimone Gymnasium, defeating Rockhurst University 70-66 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference battle on Saturday afternoon.
Gaby Bronson tallied 20 points to pace the Rangers in a wild affair featuring nine lead changes and nine ties.
The energized Rangers (7-14, 3-10 GLVC), wearing new pink uniforms in support of breast cancer research and awareness, tallied eight of the first 10 points of the game. The Hawks (6-15, 1-12 GLVC) countered with a 14-0 run over the next five minutes, securing a 16-8 advantage with 10:49 left in the first half. UW-Parkside returned the favor, following the Rockhurst surge with an 18-4 spurt, reclaiming the lead and owning a six-point buffer with 4:46 left until the break. A Mary Dineen three-pointer 33 second before halftime equalized the score as the two squads were tied 31-31 at the break.
The first nine minutes of the second half saw six lead changes and six ties as neither team held more than a one-possession lead. A Bronson three-pointer with 10:38 left reclaimed the lead for good for the homestanding Rangers at 45-44. UW-Parkside never trailed the rest of the way, building a seven-point buffer with 59 seconds left and weathering a late charge for the four-point decision.
Bronson led the Rangers with 20 points and eight assists, hitting seven of her nine shots from the floor and sinking all four of her three-point attempts.
Sarah Mlachnik posted a career-high 17 points, sinking all five of her threes while
Maddie Johnston accumulated 15 points.
Tara Knapstein led the team with six rebounds while adding three steals and eight points.
Rockhurst's Dineen led all scorers with 21 points while Lauren Meyers added 10.
The Rangers shot 52.3 percent (23-for-44) from the field and 45.8 percent (11-for-24) from three-point range while limiting Rockhurst to shooting just 42.1 percent (24-for-57) from the floor, including just 35.7 percent (10-for-28) in the second half.
UW-Parkside returns to the hardwood on Thursday, heading to Springfield, Mo., to face Drury University at 5:30 p.m.
