Women's Hoops Prevails on Senior Day

SOMERS, Wis. (Feb. 22, 2014)-- Dominating the second half of play the University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's basketball team notched one final home win for Danielle Slivka, securing a 68-52 victory over the University of Illinois Springfield in a Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division clash inside DeSimone Gymnasium.

The Rangers (8-17, 4-13 GLVC) seized a 28-23 lead at the halftime intermission and never looked back, owning at least a six-point buffer the entire second half en route to the 16-point blowout win in the team's final home contest of the season.

UW-Parkside raced out to an early 12-5 advantage but the Prairie Stars (7-18, 3-14 GLVC) battled back, tying the game at 16 with 8:47 left in the opening half. A pair of free throws from Jamie Cuny regained the lead for Illinois Springfield at 21-20 with 5:54 left, its first advantage since holding a 5-4 edge just under five minutes into the game. The Rangers tallied 13 of the next 15 points, a run spanning both halves as the home side built a 10-point buffer with 18:54 left in the game. UIS whittled the deficit to six with 17:12 left but the quickly upped the lead to 13 points and owned a comfortable advantage the rest of the way.

Tara Knapstein paced all scorers with 22 points while Gaby Bronson was one rebound shy of a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Maddie Johnston tallied nine points and eight boards while Rani Singh and Jennifer Blunt each added seven points off the bench. Sarah Mlachnik collected nine rebounds while Slivka grabbed seven boards and scored four points in her 108th game with the Green and White. Slivka was honored in a pregame Senior Day ceremony, having helped the Rangers win 79 games over the past four years, earning three NCAA Division II Tournament berths, two Sweet 16 appearances and the 2012 GLVC East Division title.

Megan Bergerud led UIS with 18 points with Alyssa Palmer adding nine. Elizabeth Kelly chipped in seven points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Rangers shot 42.1 percent (24-for-57) from the floor while limiting the Prairie Stars to shooting a paltry 29.5 percent (18-for-61) for the game. UW-Parkside dominated the inside game, owning a 32-20 advantage in points in the paint.

The Rangers close out the regular season on Thursday, making the short trek to Romeoville, Ill., to face off against GLVC East Division nemesis Lewis University at 5 p.m.
